Any experienced surfers here?
My daughters are lucky enough to live gown in north Devon and their school provides them with surfing lessons at woolacombe on Fridays. They have a great time and now I'd like to incorporate surfing in any of our weekends and holidays away with them.

Currently the school hires all the kit, but we do all have wetsuits, so I'm thinking that my wife and I need to get some lessons and buy some boards for the family

So far my research leads me to think magic carpet boards are probably the sort to go for?

Any advice as to where to start with boards, buy new or second hand and what sort of budget I should allow?

Buying good boards will aid learning a lot! You will most likely need different sized boards for you and the girls.

It all depends what you want to spend, I had my board custom shaped by Bill atlee eclipse surfboards but that was 15 years ago. Was 350 ish I think.

Mini mal was the type to go for when I was learning, I'm a kitesurfer now thou so out of it.

Hi,

Have a look at Stand Up Paddle boards or SUPs. Much easier way to get into surfing, plus they can be used for cruising along rivers, coasts etc http://www.supthemag.com/

The boards are bigger and have more volume than a conventional board but the cali is plenty big enough to carry them....

Bigbud; Bill is a mate of mine, now runs Escape surfboards!

We've just come back from a big trip abroad and popped into Decathlon. We came out with a cracking little semi soft board for our 4 year old made by TriBord. His is little but they do a range of lengths up to 8'6" ; that's where my money would go for beginners. Great shapes, soft fins, really light and very good VFM too.

If you can't get hold of one, try and pop into a decent board shaper (rather than a shop) and see what they have second hand.

I have an inflatable SUP sits in the boot all the time. So can be inflated where ever we are.

With 3 boys there is less chance of expensive damage and I find that they just enjoy using it as a jumping diving platform. It also surfs really well in small waves.

I bought mine from custard point ....

pro's its good shape for surfing, con's I feel the air inlet is the wrong end.
If your in Newquay they let you try them in the harbour.

Also Red do a few and they seem more readily available.

Although SUP is very different to pure surfing, and the size of the boards makes them much harder to handle if your new to it in bigger surf.

Cheers chaps. Those inflatable SUPs seem very interesting.
