From that description………literally anything!!

I’m going with failed dual mass flywheel.

Rougher than normal? You had the van a long time? I think my (different) engine runs great normally but at idle I wouldn’t say it was smooth at all. It is 0c outside….

Is it a constant engine speed related rattle or a random unrelated rattle?

Metallic rattle?

Does it clear when you rev the engine or get worse?

Throw us some rope here FFS.

many things. bad fuel. air in fuel. clogged fuel or air filter. flywheel. fuel pump. fuel leak or air in fuel line ? try new filters and some injector cleaner in a full tank of super diesel. any lights on the dash ?

Hi just noisy on tickover and a bit of a metallic rattle sometimes dissapears over 1000

not sure theres anything wrong here. started my car earlier all frozen over. that ran rough too for a 2nd or 2 then settled

I’d take it for a run and get it up to full running temperature, then listen to it on tick over. Most diesels run a bit rougher when really cold.

Does it disappear if you put your foot on the clutch? could be gearbox/clutch rattle.
might be bad fuel.
at this time of year when you start up the Aux fuel heater kicks in, and the heated mirrors/screen/blower/lights puts quite a strain on tickover due to alternator load.

My 2.5 130 T5 sometimes has a rough idle at 800rpm, I’m told it’s the particulate filter regen….goes away after a short while..

The idler pulley can be noisy ?
idler pulley when worn can make quite a lot of noise when stationary on tick over, (rattle and sometimes a squeak )

edit: open the bonnet and see if you can hear the noise on the left hand side of the engine (left side when facing the front of the van)

My engine was vibrating at idle and sounded noisey in the cab. It was the serpentine belt vibrating due to a seized one way clutch on the alternator pulley. Changed the pulley and runs a lot quieter now. I found a YouTube video which explains the fault well. See the link below.

hi i have checked and its the over run alternator pulley that has seized can it be changed iin situ or did have to take the alternator off

The alternator stays on the engine but you will need to remove the engine mounting and jack the engine up slightly to get the tool into the pulley. It was tight to come off but I used a heat gun to warm the pulley which made it a lot easier. I got the removal tool on eBay for £7.00 got the pulley on Autodoc for around £30 inc postage

Thanks Andy for info your reply.

Had this on an Audi - Pully turned out to be siezed so Audi put on a new alternator at the cost of £530 (didnt tell me). VAG offered a £100 goodwill jesture to try and ease the issue as the car was just outside warranty. Only every owned 1 Audi and this was 16 years ago so relatively pricy

It could possibly be the harmonic balancer. It happened on my Mini Cooper D and I had no idea it had failed until I took it in to the mini main dealer for diagnosis. Luckily I took out a mini warranty and it only cost us £100 otherwise it would have been over £500.
It was making a horrible rattle at certain revs then went smooth.
