Inspired by the new T6.1 upgrade, I thought I'd see if I could recreate something similar in my T6.

I wasn't happy with the bed extension being supported by just one strut so I put another one on the other side.

It feels more stable now and I'm happy with how it turned out.

It's a wee bit fiddly and not quite as slick as the new ratchet design.
You can adjust it from inside the van also.

Nice work. Where did you get the extra strut?

Someone was selling it on ebay. I think they had ordered it in error and couldn't return it.

£53 bargain then! I wonder if that’s all that’s involved with the T6.1 arrangement.

Looks great, but i'm confused - is that a standard strut or did you modify it?

No. As the OP suggests, the 6.1 arrangement seems to involve a form of rachet, and can perhaps be operated from within the cab, but this is a good hack for T5/6 owners.

I found the strut on the floor of the boot a few weeks back and couldn’t find where it had come from or work out what it was for, so thanks for the post! Does anyone know if an additional strut for the other side of the bed is a standard VW buy, if so do you know what the part number is?

Shop sell them as a pair. I have superglued the grommets in place.

Sorry, I didn't explain that. I had to modify one of the struts to make it 2cm shorter.

Having discussed this recently I thought I would share my slightly less slick modification for the same thing on a T5.1. It utilises and old fibreglass tent pole from a repair kit with the metal sleeve bent, a rubber foot, a Champagne cork drilled part through and a plastic pipe clip. The legs of the pipe clip wrap above the cross mesh so stop it migrating north when you load it. The cork ‘head’ has a cross cut to match the underside of the pipe clip. Iives in the under bench drawer normally. Been using for about a year without collapse! Wouldn’t load it but for two adults leaning on it for reading it is perfect. Not pretty but does the job.C191168F-5745-4734-AB3D-3F40E658F615.jpeg

That sounds like a main dealer repair to me.
