Finally got around to purchasing a kit to upgrade my auxiliary coolant heater to remote operation/parking heater. As my Beach has Climatic air con it’s slightly more involved (and expensive) than those with Climatronic. The kit I bought was second hand but unused, originally from https://www.cum-cartec-shop.de/ although similar kits are available from https://www.carsystems.eu/ these seem to use more pattern/reconditioned components, my kit is all genuine Webasto stuff apart from the well made wiring loom.

Got it all fitted today, not really a step by step guide but I did take few pictures along the way.

The wiring and Telestart unit

Upper dash trim off and radio out to access heater panel, only wire on the van that needs cutting.

Unit was mounted under passenger seat, think it’s intended to go elsewhere as there is a lot of excess wiring. Live feed for heater fan and Telestart control unit taken from leisure battery, would ideally like to power the auxiliary heater from this as well but not tracked down it’s power source yet.

Side step off to get under carpet to run wiring up to dash for the fan, probably to hardest part was finding a route up to the heater control panel. No pictures of under the van while fiddling with the wiring plug for the heater, wasn’t too bad to access.

The result seems worth the effort, switch heater on with remote after minimal setting up and within 10 minutes engine coolant temperature had risen from 9c to 44c and heater fan runs with warm-ish air coming out. Need a frosty morning to really test it out.

Great post thank you. It seems the T6 needs coding to enable this so I might contact them for an installation.

Great to hear that you have tried this and been successful. Thanks for the pictures too. I have been looking at this on the various forums for my 2016 T6 Ocean. Got to the poinCgQAAOSwEOpaL9Pf
it should work but would like to know if anyone has done it to be sure.

I am pretty sure that if a VW OEM telestart unit like the below is used

https://forums.ross-tech.com/showth...rter-2016-remote-retrofit-for-factory-webasto

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-OEM-...708811&hash=item442218520d:g:CgQAAOSwEOpaL9Pf

(I have checked the numbers on https://wwww.oemvwshop.com/)

along with a VCDS recode like this it would work.

https://www.t6forum.com/threads/webasto-auxiliary-heater-customizing.4933/

Installation in a T6 should be easier too by wiring into a red connector under the passenger (RHD) seat rather than having to get to the webasto water heater itself

https://www.t6forum.com/threads/auxiliary-heat-upgrade.5029/

My only doubt comes from the post above as to whether the climatronic fans will come on automatically by detecting the webasto water heater firing up (or vice versa). I hope this is done by the VCDS recode rather than having to reprogramme the webasto.

Has anyone tried all this on their T6 Ocean without reprogramming the webasto?

Cheers,

Jon.

Not looked into the technicalities of fitting to a T6 I’m afraid but it should be a much more integrated system as the Telestart is connected to the canbus network, I assume that is responsible for triggering the heater fans when required, usually on a time delay.

First chance to properly test it today as the Cali was used for the school run. Normally use the petrol Honda, warms up quicker and better suited to short runs. Only a light frost but 10 mins after firing up the heater it looked like this

20 mins after that kids are strapped in, no misting up inside, no scraping required, no long period idling, just one sweep of the wipers and off we go :thumb Heater wasn’t at full temp but warm enough, temperature gauge on the dash even gave a reading, although this drops a little as coolant circulates to parts the webasto doesn’t reach. All in all a much nicer experience and probably better for the van on such a short journey :)

I fitted one of these to my T5. Supplied by carsystems. It switches on climatronic fans via canbus. Did not need any coding.
Works really well. It does however use engine battery so I only use when on EHU.

I've been in contact with the guys at carsystems.eu and was told that the firmware update is sold separately from the remote kit. They say I would need to order both of the following to get it to work:

Dongle and software

Remote kit

They basically rent you the dongle for the for the firmware upgrade and you send it back.

Total cost nearly 400 EUR... gulp... Seems to be very spendy. I've read somewhere that the software update came with the kit for ~£150 but I can't seem to find from where.

Very inspiring I have the same heating setup as you I think but am a little nervous about the more involved install.

Very tempted :D but wiring to the fan makes me a little nervous

Sorry Gregg, I am still a bit confused about what kit is needed. I have AC in the front but only heater in the rear...

The cum-cartec website is a bit confusing to navigate, even in English! If buying new I’d have gone with carsystems, you’re looking for a kit that upgrades the T5 Climatic (or manual) heater/AC to ‘parking heater’, presence of rear heater has no relevance unless you want this to run as well. I’ll have a trawl through and see if I can get a link to what I think is the right one.

Wiring to the fan is fairly straight forward, if a little awkward running the wires under carpet and up the dash (top tip, I ran a length of copper fuel pipe down inside the dash and pulled the wires back up). The kit I used had a terminal that fits into the fan control multiplug and a crimp connector to attach to the original van wire that you’ve pulled out the multiplug, the only ‘non reversible’ part of the job is to cut the terminal off this wire to attach the crimp connector to.

I think for a T5 with Climatic it’ll be one of these two kits;

https://www.carsystems.eu/vw-transp...-parking-heater-9012104d-9012103d,id1547.html

https://www.carsystems.eu/vw-transp...-parking-heater-9012104d-9012103d,id2860.html

Only difference is the Telestart unit they use, more expensive one uses a newer version I believe.

Part number for my kit from Cum Cartec is 7ESTT91MK, closest equivalent I can find on their website is this;

Thanks Gregg I really appreciate you taking the time. Currently have a flexible hose over the rear heater with the pipe pointed at the window lol

My van is a 15 so same year as yours I think.

@MattBW @GreggB both those links are for "without Climatronic".
This is the correct kit for climatronic, & is what I fitted to my T5 cali with climatronic is...

https://www.carsystems.eu/vw-transp...-kit-engine-heater-parking-heater,id1540.html

Very simple to fit +ve to fused feed, earth to earth post under carpet under passenger seat. One wire goes through the floor gromet & plugs into the heater unit. Fix unit under seat plug in ariel & that's folks.

Using my cali daily at the moment, car thermostat failed. Switch it on first thing when I get up. Van all defrosted & toasty in forty minutes ready for drive to work !!

And here is the fitting manual in detail: https://carsystems.home.pl/carsystems_manuals/T5_T91.pdf

Correct, I believe that is what @MattBW needs as his Cali doesn’t have Climatronic, which is the digital climate control. Climatic is the manual system with rotary controls, as fitted in most T5 Beach’s. Easy to get confused but both sites linked have pictures to help you pick the right version.

I think I do have Climatic yes rotary knobs with AC.

Thanks for the info. Thought it wouldn't be that simple! Wonder why the T6 is different the T5?

Has anyone fitted a Webasto Telestart to their T6 California yet? I’ve had the unit delivered but not yet set about fitting it.

Did you fit yours? How did you get on?
My preliminary investigation (removing seat, and plastic under body protection and exposing the heater and the wiring harness showed that the only fitting guidance I could find online was for a significantly different set up. I left Norway so the need is not so imperative. A long way to say. It’s still in its box.

PM me if you’d like to sell it...

I have found a webasto guy nearby I may ask him to sort me something. I just don't have the confidence to do it because the instructions would make brandrup proud with their vagueness ;)

Hi, I still haven’t found anyone to fit this to my T6. How did you get on with a self-fit or did your Webasto guy sort your install?
