We are doing road trip in the summer in Austria and southern Germany for the 3 of us including our 5 year old. We are going to stay at Europa Park in the Black forest then have 3 days to head back towards Calais.

Has anyone got any good recommendations? We have been looking at the Ardennes forest or maybe the Champagne region of France but found nothing yet to take our fancy.

So i've heard there's a lovely nice and quiet small champangehouse where a club meet was last september....:D
There are at least 100 nice stopovers on that route lots of them are free aires in France .

Champagne region is quite nice but not particularly scenic IMO so unless you're going for the fizzy stuff itself (which is a great reason of course!) I wouldn't rate it especially highly for an extended stopover. Others may have different opinions on that.

The Mosel valley on the other hand is very pretty with many riverside campsites. On a map, that's the area between Koblenz and Trier, although most of the sights are towards the northern (downstream) end of that line.

We stayed on a teeny aire in Vertus, Champagne right next to a roundabout with a big champagne bottle in the middle of it! It was fun. We sat there all evening watching the activity on the roundabout, a bit like the final scenes in The Pink Panther, though no-one was wearing gorilla costumes.

Livin' The Dream, Verity.

Excellent i'll give it a look.

The mosey valley is really nice we stayed at Traben-Trabach a couple of years ago. it is a really good site but they are on their summer holidays.

BTW for anyone with the aires book hoping to visit the Champagne region, the aire in St Amand is now closed as they are building some kind of community building next to the Mairie. The village is definitely worth a drive through if you're passing though - just of N44 - it has wonderful timbered houses and barns.

We enjoyed a few days at Strasbourg (Indigo).

on the way back from Switzerland last week we stayed at www.camping-lacdorient.com just outside Troyes which we found in a thread on the forum. We absolutely loved it as did our four-year-old twins who gave the playpark and the swimming pool a massive thumbs up and we ended up staying longer than planned.

If you have an Camping Card check the validity period as it worked out 24 Euros for the night, though it appears you are travelling in summer.
