California On Tour App

I read they were getting rid of WeConnectGo, which although a bit naff was really useful for recording trips and mpg, does anyone use anything like this with the data plug?

Only use WeConnect for adding navigation points to the sat nav, don't see it as much use for anything else with a T6 Beach. The Cali app is nice for finding public loos, but what else is it good for?

Be good if there was just one app that did everything!

WeConnect is being superceded. There's a new VW app.
My WeConnect is working great, I thought it was being replace with the VW app so tried it. There is a lot of menus in German,so went back to We Connect.

Really?!
I’ve still never used it other than to test it. I might leave it in the bank vault…
The remote activation was an option on the Coast if parking heater was selected. At 350 euro I passed and stuck with the control panel activated heater.

I got one free of charge on my Coast. Haven't used it yet though and probably never will.

Noticed this in the new brochure. Should be able to eg. switch the fridge on which would be useful for me, and eg check all lights are off. Why no heater control though? I'd much rather that than being able to raise the roof, which I'd never do away from the van.

And why couldn't they integrate We Connect? Why cant I lock/unlock from California on Tour? All a bit muddled isn't it?

The extra functions are only for MY 2024 vans though.
I would love to be able to raise or lower the roof from outside. Currently the Mrs presses the buttons & I stand outside checking everything is folding in properly shouting if needed to stop.
The heater already has a remote .
@66tim99 the new app still lets me unlock mine (2023MY)

Shame I was hoping they might noodle the software for earlier MY6.1's.
Yes fair point on the roof actually.
I don't always have my heater remote with me, and it needs line of sight I understand, so be good to have it on the app as well.

Been trying to get the CaliforniaOnTour app working on our new California Ocean. I have enabled the service in the Van using the button mentioned, When the app tries to connect to the Wifi service it gets disconnected 3-5 seconds later. Frustrating. I have pinged the App support people but they barely seem to know the app exists and are not offering much help.

I've tried using this app myself, I agree the heater function which is on practically every other similar app by other manufacturers is conspicuous in its absence!

Am I missing something, this only seems to work for me when I'm stood right next to or inside my Cali. It certainly doesn't work from distances of further than 5m away which defeats the object, I think this maybe as it only connects to the Calis wi-fi signal. If I'm missing something I'd be most grateful if someone could provide some enlightenment...

Same for me.. altho in addition I did find that the app looses connection to the van if you come out of the 'remote control' screen or come out of the app itself (iphone). Each time i had to reconnect to the van's wifi. btw, the van seems to have 2 independent wifi networks; this one (exclusively for the on tour app) and the hotspot one.

It sorta works for what its designed to, but its very flakey and rather low tech. Fingers crossed for the heater function to be added.

I have the constant dropping out issue too.
If the app only works within touching distance of the vehicle, I can't see what benefit adding heating to the functionality would achieve when you can use use the control panel.

Overall I'm pretty disappointed with the Cali On Tour app in it's present form, hopefully it will evolve over time......

So what’s the point of this app? All it gives me is Maps which is also included in the Volkswagen app. No remote control screen for me - maybe because mine is a MY21 California?

That's a very good question indeed for which I don't have the answer. I can only get it to consistently work when I'm actually sitting in the Cali itself, when I'm in touching distance of the control panel and light switches it's supposed to control 'remotely' I'm hoping the app is just in prototype phase and working from greater distances will be added at a later date.

My view currently of this app, to quote a saying from Blackadder, it's like fitting wheels to a tomato, time consuming and completely unnecessary :D

Are you presented with a Remote Control screen in the app though? I’m not.

I have to firstly choose the 3 horizontal lines at the top left of the screen and select 'Remote Control' and it's prompts me to connect. Only after it connects, when I'm in or right next to the vehicle will it offer me the remote control options.

I don’t get that menu option - see attached.
I think it’s because MY21 Cali’s don’t support remote lock/unlock or remote heater control. MY20 and MY22 (and later) Calis do but not MY21 :-(

Mine is an MY23 and don’t have the remote control option in this app either. I thought it was just the MY24 vans that support it, as they seem to be coming with the WiFi button on the dash in the UK now albeit think other countries may have had that before the UK (I.e. my California handbook dated Nov 22 shows the button, but think it says something along the lines of territory dependent). Doesn’t sound essential, at this stage anyway, but still wish I had it as something else to fiddle around with !

Mine was made Nov 23 so I'm guessing it maybe a MY24. This is where the link appears in my App, but I wouldn't worry about not having it, don't think you're missing too much !!!

There is an option under the van details in the settings screen so say if the van has “remote control” but if I set that to yes the app won’t accept it so it must know from my recorded VIN number that my van doesn’t have it. And yes yours would be an MY24, think the model year changes after their factory summer shut down.

As I pick up the new 6.1 next week, i am a bit lost on how many apps i have available! Looks like VW main app, We Connect Go (cannot find We Connect or plus) and then this one California-on-tour.

I will try this app but what is the difference with the others? I will play next weekend but just want to know if it is worth bothering :)

I have a MY24 and can’t seem to keep the remote connection for more than a few seconds. I think the new app has potential especially for opening /closing the pop top when you can keep an eye on it from outside the van but I would need to be much more confident that it will keep a secure connection. Has anyone managed to get it working reliably?
