Hi All

We're thinking of going to Switzerland next year for the family van trip. We're 2 adults and 2 kids under 10. We're looking for the whole Alps, lakes open air but with things for kids to do experience, foes anyone have any recommendations, advice ?

Thanks in advance

Lauterbrunnen Valley near Interlaken. Things to do in the area: Trumelbach Falls; mountain railway to Wengen/Kleine Scheidegg/Jungfrau; Cable car to Schilthorn; lots of walking routes.

Don't forget schynigge platte, grindelwald and the trails from männlichen to kleine scheidegg and from first to grosse scheidegg. You can watch the murmeli alaong the trails. Both trails are quite flat, so its easy for the kids. There are also great playgardens in männlichen and bort. bort is the middle station along tha cable to first.

Take a look at @Pro moochers youtube channel. They’ve filmed a few in Switzerland.
Looks both beautiful and fun.
Be warned, it’s a very expensive country.

I forgot to recommend you the campsite, Camping Jungfrau in Lauterbrunnen. You can reach everything from there by train. They have discount fares for kids and adults for trains and cablecars.

We’ve been to that part of Switzerland (Bernese Oberland near Interlaken) lots too. It is fantastic for walking, mountain biking and with kids (ours are now 10 and 8). There is an amazing network of mountain railways and cable cars, so it is very accessible and you can have some high walks and amazing views without a big slog to get up into the mountains (which is great with kids) or lots of driving, The train and cable car rides make for some great, relaxed days out. It is worth looking at buying the Jungfrau railways multi-day pass - it is expensive, but works out much cheaper if you use it to travel around the area as we do and it seems to cover most trains, buses, cable cars etc . There are loads of really good adventure playgrounds for the kids and lots for them to do besides. The lakes either side of Interlaken are worth a visit too for swimming and paddle boarding. The railway pass even covers lake trips on the paddle steamer.

Favourite walks for us are from the top of the Mannlichen cable car (an excellent playground at the top, coffee shop etc and a hidden playground in the woods half way up from the Grindelwald side at Hollenstein cable car station), from Eiger Gletscher station (an accessible route across foot of the north face of the Eiger - go via Kleine Scheidegg station or on the new V-bahn), from First cable car station to the Bachalpsee (although it is a well-trodden path it is beautiful in the right weather and there is also a cliff walk at First with amazing views and zip wires) and Murren and Wengen are both worth a visit by mountain railway too.

If you want to stay in a mountain village, then Grindelwald is an excellent base in the area, is a nice place to be and has 2 campsites. One is nearer the centre than the other, but both are near stations. We have never used either site as we have always stayed in rented places…. Grindelwald is incredibly well-linked by train and cable cars to lots in the surrounding area. it has a good supermarket, 2 swimming pools (indoor in the town centre and outdoor about 15 mins walk away, both with waterslides) and lots of outdoor and gift shops as well as places to eat.

If you are less fussed about staying in a village, then you can also stay in Interlaken. We have stayed a few times at Camping Manor Farm in Interlaken which is right on one of the lakes and with direct water access. It is slightly out of town and the main station to access the mountain railways and cable car, but there is a regular and reliable bus from the campsite to the town and you can also cycle or take the van as you want to.

All in all it is a great area with lots to do.

Just to lob something else in, worth saying that we visited the French alps this summer - Portes du Soleil - and that was equally good with lots to do. It is right on the Swiss border, so we did find ourselves in Switzerland for a couple of trips and walks. Although not as well connected as the Bernese Oberland with its trains and cable cars (this was more chairlifts, so v fun), it was easy to use the lifts etc to get up into the mountains and we could use the van a fair bit to drive to different places in the area. Good campsites in Les Gets and Chatel (both have pools, Chatel pool is indoor) although both are a bit out of town.

Hope this helps. Happy to give you further and betters on PM if useful.

….and a +1 for the Bort playground on the cable car route from Grindelwald to First and the TrottI scooter you can hire from there to scoot down from Bort to Grindelwald.

That’s great , really detailed , keeping the kids entertained is always the issue , especially at their current age.

Really appreciated

Thanks
