VW T5.1 Caravelle Camper
VW T5.1 Caravelle Camper
The time has come to sell our much loved Caravelle Exec (or Bob as christened by my daughter).
We've owned the van for around 9 years and it's been such a brilliant and practical vehicle. I don’t think there is a better all-rounder out there. It can cross Europe with a group of mates on a ski trip one day and then fit a fully inflated paddleboard inside the next.
The van has done less and less mileage each year and is generally only used for the odd camping weekend and an annual drive to the Alps in winter. This is the main reason we are selling the van - it just needs to be used more.
THE VAN
Mechanically the van is sound. It's a 2010 60 plate BiTDI with a manual gearbox. The notorious EGR was blanked several years ago as a precaution (work carried out by Retro Resus) and the van has been absolutely fine ever since. Current mileage is a little under 93k and this is likely to change very little in the coming weeks. I have loads of service history for the van and receipts for all work done over the years.
The van has been lowered (Bilstein shocks) and after a rear spring was snapped (Oxford is pot hole central) I had all the springs replaced with Eibach Comfort Adjustable Lowering Springs (recommended and ordered from the excellent Chilli Jam vans). The van sits a little lower than standard but not much but it allows it to fit in a standard 2.10m car park with the pop top and roof bars.
Wheels are in good condition overall and the tyres were all replaced recently and have around 3000 miles on them. They are all-seasons tyres and proved to be excellent in the snow of the Alps at the start of the year.
Bodywork has some scratches and a couple of dings - none of them are particularly horrendous and I think a decent body shop or valet could get the majority buffed out easily enough.
Due to lack of use the motor battery was replaced in the last couple of weeks as the last one was old and not being used enough to be maintained.
The van comes with
- 7 seats all in full working order with the middle row having inbuilt booster seat.
- Table (never really used and mostly lived in the garage from when the van was purchased it - cup holders may need a new spring/replacement)
- Both electric doors are working and I have one key that operates them. When I bought the van it was supplied with just a single remote key and a "surf" key. We bought a second remote key but it does not remotely operate the sliding doors.
- Front and rear parking sensorsHeated front seats
- Multi-function steering wheel
- Head unit with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto
THE "CAMPER"
Soon after getting the van we had a leisure battery and 7-day programmable diesel heater fitted so we could camp in the vehicle in all weathers. As the kids grew we then had a pop-top fitted alongside 12v camping lights fitted which are powered from leisure battery (relatively new and located under passenger seat). The pop-top was fitted by Skyline in Weston-Super-Mare and the rear air con vents and controls were relocated as part of this work. The pop-top has the "scenic" canvas meaning it can all be zipped up out of the way and the bi-fold bed option which means the bed folds up into the pop-top allowing for more room "downstairs"
We have a folding mattress and self-made multiflex board equivalent to allow for a bed when the bench seat is opened out.
The van also has a Reimo awning rail to attach a full size awning or just a sheet/pole awning.
EXTRAS INCLUDED IN SALE
Official VW bike rack - holds four bikes and has been upgraded to have a lock on each arm rather than the standard single lock
Swivel plates for passenger and driver's seat - we did have these fitted but took them off due to not using the van enough to make them worthwhile. They do reduce the available headroom but are simple to fit and use.
3-way camping fridge (mains, gas and 12v)
Windscreen solar panel
Can probably chuck in some other camping stuff too
Van now has a new MOT
