So had confirmation that I can collect my 150 DSG Beach on Wednesday next week

Goes without saying I'm very excited and will be posting on how it goes...

Was a bit surprised that dealer has asked me to transfer balance of funds (so whole amount minus deposit) in advance. Is this normal? Or should I be nervous about paying until I've seen the van?

I was just going to let my bank know a large payment would be going through on the day.

How have others paid in the past?

Cheers

Steve

We paid on collection. If it's a proper VW dealership with a good reputation I wouldn't worry. If it's an independent which could go out of business between now and next Weds, I'd be a bit more careful with such a large payment ....

It's a proper VW dealer...they've said I can pay on the day but with a debit card transaction charge that isn't really an option.

We paid all on debit card for both our vans told the bank and moved funds into current account - no issues.

never been charged for using a debit card not even sure it is legal our dealers max for credit card without fee was £2k

I wouldn't pay in advance. Imagine turning up and finding a big issue with the vehicle.

You can pay with a debit card with NO fees, a credit card might attract a fee though. You might have to pre-warn your bank if it's a big amount, which it most likely is.

Good luck and enjoy it!

Mmm...so the debit card fee is a company policy (they are entitled to do it) and they can't waive it. Not too worried about the van not being right as I could reject it and have rights. Without going into details my job on banking touches on insolvency and more worried about them going bust overnight. Small risk maybe...but not something I should have to worry about. Looks like I take that risk or pay nearly £2k in fees.

It's a shame because I've had a really positive experience until now and this has caused unnecessary anxiety.

Very surprised if there was a fee with debit card, credit card yes but not a debit card. Paid that way on my last three motors and no charge.

2k in fees for using a debit card? Surely there's been a misunderstanding.

Not a misunderstanding sadly...although in my frustration I did exaggerate slightly...it's £1300 not £2000!!!

Have asked the dealer to escalate the request for the fee to be waived, will see if they can resolve it for me.

Appreciate the responses, I've never had a problem paying by debit card before either. Glad I'm not alone in feeling uncomfortable paying in advance.

Ironically these charges will be banned in a couple of months.(due to the good old EU).

Actually it was a misunderstanding. We got our wires crossed on percentages!!

At least I didn't go and moan about it on a public forum...oh wait...

All sorted now.

Been a stressful week, campervan can't come quickly enough to get away from it!

No one can charge more than the cost to them to process the transaction, top tip when buying anything of value, always pay at least £100.00 by CREDIT card, you then get full protection of the whole amount, so even if the dealer went bust with all your cash, the credit card company will be liable to you for the WHOLE sum.
Cheapest insurance policy in the world!

That's a good bit advice.

Thankfully it's all sorted and now really excited about getting the van.

Even going to pick it up feels like a mini adventure because I didn't go with my local dealer.

A big thank you to this forum which has been invaluable over the last couple of years whilst we've been toying with the idea.

Will be good to update my profile on Weds (at long last) to say that I actually own a campervan.

Great news Steve39, keep my fingers crossed! However there's a check list/list with points to chwck when picking up in the VIP download section that might supports you on the Cali-Pickup Day.

Cheers

When you get home, let us know how many times you caught yourself grinning like a Cheshire Cat on the drive back.

Waited for 5 years for this...was it worth it? Hell yes!

Me within 30 minutes of getting home...

Deposit was on CREDIT card and balance on collection (not before I had done my own PDI). My dealer had a max payment limit on a CREDIT card for the balance which I took full advantage of and the rest was paid for on a DEBIT card. The DEBIT card was pre-authorised by my Bank after I had called them two days previously to advise of large transaction. This service was free and the dealer also was not charged. All very painless with me feeling I was in charge of my money at every step of the way. My dealer was VW Van Center Birmingham. A very knowledgeable salesman to boot. (Clive Lediard)
