Part 2. My tray storage for everyday use and camping:

Kitchen Box

We have found that items tend to drift back into the house or don't get put back into the various boxes after being washed up. So to prevent this, I being rather OCD, compiled a check list of standard essential kit for each box. It sounds a bit anoracky and it is but it's now a simple matter to check if everything is present and correct. The lists which can be easily updated on the computer have been encapsulated and placed in each box.

View attachment 39210

These two boxes are for Electrical equipment (EHU cable etc) and Washing up Equipment respectively.

These two boxes at the rear are for veg, groceries and other food stuffs. They only get used when we go away otherwise they remain empty apart from two empty large click top boxes for flours etc. The top box is shallow to take tins etc whilst the bottom box is useful for bulky goods. The water box contains 2 x 5 litres of fresh water. The Fridge/Freezer is a Waeco Dometic CFX 35. The spare 240v and Continental two pin electrical leads are stored in the small gap behind the fridge (front end of the vehicle) in the pull out tray along with a 19mm socket and breaker bar for wheel changing.

The Comforts Cali topper stores nicely in the space on top of the Euro boxes. The Comfortz awning room is stowed on top of the VW Comfort mattress on top of the Multiflex. I store a silicon rubber collapsible washing bowl and bucket along with a tray in the gaps between the Multiflex legs and the vehicle side trims

This photo shows the space in the rear compartment with the Calicap 700 fitted. The additional two captains swivel seats could be fitted as well if needed. Note: the bench seat could actualy go back a little further still but I still need to make up some form of rubber stop to prevent the plastic on the rear of the bench seat base coming in contact with the tray subframe when the bench is moved backwards on the floor rails. The rubber stop would prevent any damage to the plastic bench seat trim.

Hi, I really like this set up with the boxes, thanks for posting the photos, it really helps to see it for real ( though I know it was a couple of years ago now!) Can I ask where you put any gas and stoves, are they in the kitchen box? We have a Cadac Safari Chef and used to use our calor patio gas when we camped with the tent where it stayed outside but wondered whether to switch to campingaz if it would fit in better in our Beach. We also have a brukit with smaller gas canisters so working out where to keep these too.

Thanks, Bev

After much procrastination.......decided on "Hatch" version.
Ordered last Thursday, arrived Sunday morning, fitting took about 45 mins. Rearrangement of boxes etc took about three hours! Smiles will last rather longer with no contortions required to get at our stuff! :happy

Hello Bev,
Our cooking stove sits in the "kitchen box" along with a Campingaz 907 cylinder. It suits us just fine although I am currently considering altering our stowage plan. I'll come back to that. Here are three photos which may help.

At present there are six Euro boxes in my stowage system so there is plenty of space to store a stove.

However, I am currently considering replacing the Kitchen box and the two other boxes that sit on top of it with a "Dock" camping kitchen. See the following thread for details.

https://vwcaliforniaclub.com/threads/has-anyone-got-a-dock-camping-kitchen.35257/

This camping kitchen will fit precisely into the space left by the three aforementioned Euro boxes. It has internal stowage for a two burner stove. So it may be worth a look.

I hope that helps.

Best wishes
Paul

P.s the Campingaz 907 refills are expensive but last for ages. May be worth looking at other energy sources.

Thanks for your reply, it’s really helpful. I’ll compare the gas refill to our patio gas and see if there’s much difference. I think it’s propane in the patio gas, is Campingaz butane? Do you know if it matters which type is carried in the van and can it be left in the van in hot weather? We always left ours in the porch when we had the tent so I didn’t worry about it there.

I’ve read that I should get an LPG sticker though so will get one ordered.

I saw that thread about the Dock kitchen, it does look good, neatly storing everything you need for camp cooking. Do you think you’ll get one?

I stand to be corrected but I seem to recall that the Campingaz cylinders contain 100% Butane whereas the cartridges contain a butane/propane mix. Our gas stays in the van all year round buried in the boot so never gets that hot.
It's a good idea to display an LPG warning sticker. If your vehicle is in an accident or is on fire then one of these LPG stickers will warn the emergercy services to treat the vehicle with extreme caution.

As for the "Dock" camping kitchen, I haven't decided yet. I really want to see one before making up my mind.

Hi everyone. Thanks to all who’ve posted on this thread, I’ve found it to be a game changer for us and super helpful. One thing I’m slightly unsure of is sizing.

The website now offers 710 760 and 810mm.
Does anyone know if the 710 equivalent to the 700 mentioned in this thread? I’d like to maximise space for the boxes as in the 700mm example with the euro boxes but with 4-5 in the ocean need to keep space upfront maximised too!

So question is whether I need the 760 or the 710 to equal the space offered by the 700 example?

Thanks in advance for any time you spend reading this otherwise utilitarian and dull post. On a happier and more interesting note. We bought the ocean after reading this forum and 4 years later with two children (now) up to 6 years old it. Has. Been. The. Best. Thing. Ever.

Happy camping all.

Just to go slightly of topic, I have just installed the calicap. But the right hand lock will not twist around to lock whatever I try, it sort of semi locks by pushing down but not completely engaging. It’s very easy to still push that side around. Has anyone else had this issue. I can’t see why it won’t lock

I can’t see why it won’t lock
I think if the tray isn't quite square it won't rotate. Try undoing them all and doing this one first.
Edit - Also make sure you have fully unscrewed it

Hello,
The 700 mm tray mentioned in the above thread actually has a 740mm useable internal depth and refers to the version for the Beach. I posted some time ago and I believe Calicap have made some changes since then.

With reference to the version suitable for the Ocean, Calicap's website says:

" The 760mm version fits into the vehicle with the rear seat position as standard. When selecting the 800mm version, the rear seat must be pushed 2-3cm further into the passenger compartment. For this, the 800 version is able to hold two Euro boxes with a depth of 400mm in a row".

As far as I can make out the internal usable depth of the 710 and 760 is 709 and 759 respectively. So if you were to use Euro boxes you could go for versions with a 400mm and a 300mm width. There will obviously be a small gap remaining of either 9 or 59mm respectively. As stated, if you go for the 810 you could stow two 400mm wide Euro boxes but with a slight loss of space in the passenger compartment.

Personally, I'd go for the 760. With our 700 (740mm) Beach tray I keep a 19mm socket and breaker bar in the gap that's left.

Borris thank you so much for looking at this. I will take a look and come back with some thoughts and eventually pictures. All the very best.

One question from an obviously me talked challenged chap like me! Do we order from the .ch or .de website for this?! Cheers

Been eyeing up one of these pull out drawers and probably would have bought if they were in stock. But another member (Tim) gave me the idea of making myself. He suggested bending aluminium angle for corners so all credit to him on that idea. Came out really well and is feels strong enough for our needs.

Parts:

4 x 1.2m 32x32 aluminium angle (tray frame £6 each)
2 x heavy duty sliders (most expensive part at £49 for the pair. Takes 98kg load)
1 x 1.2m 50x50 aluminium angle (bracket £12)

for the base I was gonna buy some plywood but I had some left over manufactured wood flooring from our living room. A little thicker and heavier but kinda looks nice and works for the moment.

and rigorously strength tested by my helper.

Nice job, well done.
Can I ask where you got the Aluminium Angle, and the sliders from?

Nice job
Your assistant looks well pleased

The plastic parts on the u/s of the multiflex (bag handle holder and rubber strap) can be removed to give a little more space to the u/s of the multiflex

I was lazy and it’s all from Amazon. Out of lockdown it would be cheaper still to source from specialist places I’m sure.

great tip! I actually cut the bracket to the shape of the gaps underneath the multiplex so it’s not squeezing or damaging it in any way. Multiplex holds one end. Eyelet bolt into the rail other side.

Would I be right in saying thise are the parts?

50mm heavy duty rails (based on your pricing)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07S8T6T89/?tag=eliteelect-21

32x32mm angle
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B077Y987SW/?tag=eliteelect-21

And possibly 50x50mm angle for corners?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07KKLYLTZ/?tag=eliteelect-21

Yep the first two look like the ones. Other than it being a 60mm rail (here)

I think I plumped for 50x50 for the brackets. Was a little more but amazon pricing seems to fluctuate a lot. (here)
Although all probably cheaper from specialists if you're more patient than me. ;)

I'll get out to the van and measure up the dimensions later. Basically I had to adjust a few times so it'll save others the effort.

I put the measurements for anyone that needs in this DIY post:

The actual tray length of my set up is 740mm, as you have stated, although I am pretty sure that at time of writing they described it on their website as "the 700". I seem to remember they then advertised the 600, 700, 800 and 1000 trays. The fine print may have detailed the exact dimensions. Sorry, I can't remember.

With a 400 and 300mm Eurobox taking up most of the length the remaining 40mm provides space for a breaker bar for wheel changing and a canvas wind shelter for our gas stove.

I am sure you will find the pull out tray and Euroboxes a real game changer. No more pulling everything out whilst tunneling to the back of the boot to find something in the dark. Just pull the tray out and select what you need. The trays are expensive but are exceptionally well made and easy to fit. IMO worth every euro. You can even cook on it under the shelter of the tailgate with the boxes still in situe.

Good luck.

Finally stopped procrastinating; just ordered! (& still discounted) Getting ready to be more organised and to make getting away (days or weekends) in the remainder of 2020 easier and more fun! Thanks @Borris & @BeagleMum. Will post some photos when I get organised - EuroTrays next!! & then fridge - what did you go for @paul_f?

I went for the CFX3 35 with a discount code I found online (I did post it up somewhere)
Although after buying that I discovered my local camping shop sells a number of similar units for half the price (although not quite as nice)
