Just bought my first California Ocean. It’s suggested by some sales websites that the Thetford 335 fits in the cupboard under the cutlery tray. I’ve just measured the space and it looks like it will only go in ‘sideways’ and even then, the door opening width is 385mm and the depth of the potti is 382mm - so very tight fit. Anyone doing this successfully? Also considering the Dometic 972 but looks like that’s too big.

I just purchased the TROBOLO WandaGO Lite composting Toilet. Fits no problem and all the reviews are excellent. Quite expensive but hey isn’t everything these days.

Thanks - I’m a bit confused by the 335 model £95 and the 335 qube £230. I’m assuming they are different models?
As far as I can see they are the same 335 but the "Qube" bundle comes with straps and trays. I'd get the 335, keep the cupboard space, it's already at a premium, and slot it in the boot, investing in a SpaceMate if you are that way inclined.

Thanks. For that loo, it says it’s 382mm deep. I’m not measuring my cabinet as being as deep as that right across the width. It’s less deep closer to the passenger seat. Does it fit in without turning it sideways? The pic on the Trobolo site shows it in place, but sticking out of the cupboard!

Toilet in the kitchen space? I guess it's no worse than having the thing at the end of the bed when sleeping downstairs

The idea is more so that the kitchen area space is already tight in terms of the essentials; pans, pots, food, and so on (albeit depends on the individual setup). Assuming you're not pooping as you're driving, you can simply unload it as/when you need from the boot. The SpaceMate tray is a godsend for being able to reach items from under the underside of the rear bed end.

My point was nothing to do with it being there it was the usage of space. Personally I prefer to maximise space for kitchen and food stuffs in the cupboard and my p*ss in the boot through the day.

I went for the thetford 335. Fits nicely with a bit of faffing moving the shelf up. It’s a shame that it leaves a pretty useless shelf above, below the cutlery drawer. For that reason I decided it would be best in the left hand side of the cupboard, leaving a much more useful shelf above….but for some reason VW have decided not to make the shelf on that side adjustable in height. Shame.

. see post no 8

With the shelf in the upper position as shown, it is perfect for plates, dishes, chopping board etc. To the right of the toilet we keep cleaning materials, chemicals for the toilet, plastic bags etc. So no food in the toilet side of the cupboard. Every tiny nook and cranny gets used in our van!

Actually Brandrup makes a tray for it. With the tray the pot stays where it's intended

Use the 335. Buy a small fold up ottoman from Dunelm (in a range of colours). It fits perfectly over the 335, becoming a useful seat / extra surface and totally disguised.
Thetford 335 sits in the boot within the rectangular plastic tray of an Ikea shoe stand.......it can easily be slid out from the tailgate (off the plastic tray) and carried in to the living space through the sliding door for night time use.
By permanently removing the screw stop from the left side floor rail, the bench seat can be slid forward to a position where the front of the seat squab touches the B pillar, and (provided you're sufficiently agile/slim) this gives enough access behind the bench seat to climb in, pull the 335 forward on the Ikea plastic tray , and use the 335 there when taking a comfort stop on travels.... almost a private "rest room".
Also lifting the 335 onto 4 lightweight yoga blocks arranged on the floor puts the 335 at a much better/comfortable height.
Kitchen shelving and cupboards are too valuable to use/lose for storing a toilet IMO

Locate in the rail next to the kitchen unit the T30 Torx screw in the stop bracket and note its position next to the separation in the rail alumininium cover plates, which should then be removed to enable the stop bracket itself to be fully unscrewed and taken out. Replace the short length of rails and then the bench seat can be moved forward all the way up to the "B" pillar, this then giving good access for a person to the (now) large floor area behind the bench seat.
And in fairness to VW, provision has been made to utilise the otherwise inaccessible drink's cup holder under the offside bench seat as a toilet roll holder........made for it!

Go for thetford, IMO, spare parts tend to be readily available at most camping outlets even for old models.

We went for next size up and now slightly regretting it. Every bit of space counts when it’s the limiting factor

Thetford 335, rhs of the kitchen cupboard and sitting on additional accessory tray ensures stability.
We didn’t raise the shelf just removed it as have sufficient storage space and it’s easier to access the Thetford. That said we’ve had it nearly 6 years and it hasn’t been used …. an emergency accessory lol

I'm gonna say it again! why take up valuable space in the kitchen or the boot when there is plenty of room in the cabin (inside the Dunelm Ottoman). It's discreet, makes a great foot stool and keeps all the storage space! Just sayin......... :)

We like the same location as you, but unlike you use the 335 regularly though just for ‘no. 1’: but then we are old and our bladders not what they were. This facility and the California’s internal space has transformed our extensive travels compared to our previous saloon car, when journeys seems to revolve around toilet stops (often found to be unclean) particularly for my wife who is less inclined to visits behind a tree.

But we have moved the shelf up and find it still useful for:

Zoflora (for 335 upper tank)
Eco dishwasher tablets (for lower tank)
Rolled up cotton bag (for disguised lower tank carrying to hotel rooms etc)
Pack of ‘bog in a bag’ refills, never used but just in case (would fit temporarily into 335 for ‘no.2’)
Wipes
Rubber gloves
Etc

We use Zoflora and eco tabs in the 335 as we dislike the smell of the proprietary Thetford products. This has worked fine to date, though I seldom leave the tank after use for more than a day or two.
