Calibed Prestige vs Brandrup iXtend

Did the supplier at least remove the EU VAT?
It would appear that when I ordered the mattress online on their website I was automatically charged and paid EU VAT but when the mattress arrived today, the invoice states that I was not charged EU VAT. Thanks to your excellent reply, I have just emailed them with all the relevant documents attached, asking them to refund me the 88 EUR I appear to have overpaid. Fingers crossed. I have just laid down on the Calibed on my living room floor & it is indeed extremely comfortable. Probably the last word in comfort for the California lower bed. Now I have to decide what to do for the fitted cover or sheet. Because it is folded/hinged into three sections, and 8cms deep, I doubt one zipped up cover would work. So I guess a custom made fitted sheet elasticated in the corners would be the way to go.

Thank you Corradobrit for your information. You may have saved me 88 EUR. I didnt even think of it.

No worries. If you don't ask you don't get.
btw I find the twin elasticated sheets from Ikea work well. I have the grey Percale versions on both the upper and lower mattresses. No issues with folding the Calibed Prestige.

My previous reply may have been a bit confusing, so to clarify; when ordering, I paid 562.38 EUR. When the mattress arrived, the invoice stated 474.32 EUR............Hold on!! As I was finishing typing my last Reply, an email arrived. I have just opened it to find it is a credit transaction for 88.06 EUR from Garage Adolf van Hoe en Zonen with kind regards! Thank you again Corradobrit.

Could you tell me what size elasticated sheets you have?

I’m also following with interest. Get my cali in June and didn’t order the uncomfort mattress, so looking for a good alternative for downstairs.
oh, and I’m also keen to know if they can be used with the bed when it’s being used in the “raised” position (eg: for watching TV).

Just pushed the button myself on the roof version. Hefty price for a bit of foam but we sleep upstairs all the time. Hope my VAT refund is as smooth as yours, and it sneaks through customs without a fee (no chance!)

2 thumbs up for the Calibed. Super comfortable for side sleepers, unlike the uncomfort mattress. Never examined the Brandrup but looking at the specs both seam quite similar with a hybrid foam insert.
Which side do you sleep on?
First or second photo?

Also with the cutout there is only one way to install the mattress.

I am reading all the above with a great interest. Thanks for inputs. The lower VW comfort mattress is acceptable for me but not on all nights. Sleeping on the side seems often uncomfortable. I am very temped to replace it with a Calibed Prestige 3.( the lower bed) However, I am still on the fence with a decision and hope that maybe some additional testimonies/comments will push me over. It is an expensive item and not returnable, thus my caution.

The fact that you rarely see them for sale used, unless the owner has sold the Cali, speaks volumes. Thats how I got mine here in Germany. Try to find one used on Ebay Kleinanzeigen. I paid 200 euros and sold the uncomfortable mattress for 150 euros so actually it only ended up costing 50 euros.

My first Cali, which I had upgraded to a Calibed upstairs, was stolen with everything in it. The very first thing I ordered before the new Cali arrived were two Calibeds, for upstairs and now also for downstairs. Since then the downstairs bed has become my favourite for winter camping and for when I want a quiet night. Really comfortable.

I am a side sleeper too and the Calibeds make all the difference for me. I have no first hand experience of the Brandrup offer however, so no input from me on their comparison.

I never ordered the uncomfort mattress thanks to feedback on this forum but we were able to try a number with the help of campervantastic. Both me and the wife preferred the Brandrup for comfort and ease of use, it takes up space but we get everything we need in the Cali. Still very happy with it a year later and we like the rear shelf tilt function, saves carrying extra pillows.

Thanks Califan61. I do not understand this "rear shelf lift" at all. I read Brandrup writeup but still not get it. With a current VW "comfort" mattress I can lift the "parcel shelf" up and still use the bed. So what is different or special about Brandrup version? BTW, I have several Brandrup products on the van from isotope to seat covers and in between and all are great, I know. Expensive as hell but top products.

He's refering to the tilt feature to raise the head of the bed. For this to work best with the mattress in place it has to fold at the appropriate point. The VW Uncomfort, Calibed and Brandrup mattresses all offer this capability.
