Questions for people with local knowledge of Ghent please…

We are travelling to Bruges for a short break soon, and while we’re there we want to travel to Ghent. I first looked at the train, eco friendly and some site-seeing, but at over €40 for 2 people return it seems expensive for a 30 minute journey! So I’m looking at driving in the Cali.

Firstly, it looks like most parking is within the ring road, and there’s an LEZ. Our Cali is EU6 compliant, so should we be okay? I’ve started an LEZ application in anticipation.

Second, where is the best place to park (without height restriction) ? Any free parking?

Thanks all.

Standard return train ticket is 16.20€ pp (8.50€ if you’re >65). Take the train and save you the parking hassle; only issue is frequent industrial action of train personnel may spoil your plans (we’re half way through a 9-day strike at the moment).

If you prefer taking the Cali, try a green zone, it’s the cheapest

We stayed at Camping Memling there’s a bus stop just 100m away. Bus 50 goes from Brugge bus station back to Memling, but some bus 50 continues on to Ghent.

A 10 x single trip card on the De Lijn buses (buy at the petrol station next to bus stop, valid for 3 days I think) I think was €17. Myself and my wife used 4 of those single trip vouchers for a return day visit to Ghent.

We waited about 20 minutes for a bus to turn up that said Ghent on it - one or two go somewhere else.

Thanks @CaliTraveller and @Justinitus thats really great info. We are staying at Camping Memling also, so we'll check the bus timetable.

I think from what you're both saying is 'don't drive into Ghent'. We will take that advice!

I love this forum, we have experts on literally everything !!

Looking at the bus routes, did you change bus at Eeklo Station ? Journey seems to be about 1h 45m?

We got the bus too - direct from the road outside camping memling - no changes necessary but it did take a while so we got the train back. I don’t remember the train being expensive just buying the ticket on the day, this was 2 years ago. Ghent was lovely but seemed quite hectic after a few days in the amazing tranquility of Bruges (and I live in Birmingham!!) Have a great trip!

No changing bus, we just waited for a bus that said Ghent St Peter on the front. Final stop was Ghent St Peter train station. Station is a pleasant 20min walk into the centre of Ghent or take the tram.

Bus takes a while (about 1:45h I think) but you’d spend 30min or so getting to Bruges train station anyway, plus waiting for the train. Not sure how long the train journey is.

A top tip - download Atlas Obscura app (we use it anywhere we go, UK included). It shows you weird and interesting sights to see. Like the hanging boy sculpture on the side of a house and the street lamps near the Gravensteen that flash whenever a child is born in Ghent. We also stopped off at Sint Sixtus abbey on the journey back to UK where the Trappist monks that brew the beer have built a drive-thru off licence.

From where you’re staying, it seems indeed to best take the bus from busstop “Sint-Krijs, Vossesteert” to Gent St-Pieters. Line 50 seems to be the one you need. You can download the app “De Lijn” to check timetables and busstops etc. Available in English.

Going to Bruges train station and capturing a train to Gent will indeed take some time, so may be quicker by bus.

Enjoy your stay.

Hi, we live in Bruges and when going to Ghent always park next to the watersports course (look for Zuiderlaan); from there it's a 30min walk to the very center. Or you could take the tram, same tickets as for the bus (De Lijn). Taking the bus to Ghent is from busstop "Sint Kruis Watertoren" opposite to the grand Delhaize store, some 10min walk from campsite Memling. In Drongen you"ll probably have to change bus (line 12) but not sure. Would take all in all 1h30... so train is lot faster. You can park the Cali next to trainstation in Bruges, only 7 euro for whole day! If you need more info on what to do&see, send me PM!

We’re in Ghent in two weeks. We’re staying at Urban Gardens, doesn’t help with your parking but am getting excited so thought I’d mention!
