After market carpet retainers

Hi, wondering if anyone knows if I am able to remove the existing retainers and pop in the new style which would enable me to secure the after market mats we’ve got?

Saw a video on line that suggested I would be able to unscrew once top clip popped out, but this is not the case and must have been for another VW vehicle.

The whole thing does rotate anti clockwise but doesn’t seem to loosen. Hoping it’s not going to need the footwell trim removed to do this. Please see attached pics
