Reading so many tales of woe, I just thought I would add just one more. After two years of faultless motoring in our gorgeous black SE 180 dsg 4motion this recently happened.
Four with = happiness and contentment.

But three with and one without = complete and total misery. :(

But all was not lost as this sad story has a happy ending. After I asked our dealer (SMG Tonbridge) to replace the little chrome cap, they promptly went one better and replaced the entire table. Fantastic service.

Apparently the pin and chrome cap can't be supplied separately. Why not?

Glad to hear of your happy ending.

It often certainly seems to be necessary to replace whole assemblies where a small part would suffice.

Has anyone discovered that elusive little part that when it fails VW will have to replace the whole Vehicle ?

Basically these assemblies are supplied to VW from a 3rd Party and if they don't supply parts then VW replaces the whole assembly and sends it back to the 3rd Party who bare the cost.
Someone somewhere has made a financial decision that this is the more cost effective way of doing business. Madness to us, cost-effective to them.:thumb
