We tend to use our Petromax Atago more than anything these days as Alexa loves it due to not really having to tend over it - although it's not gas it is really versatile as you can grill, fry etc as normal, place a Dutch Oven directly in it or even cook bread etc. Then when done you also have a fire pit to keep warm in the evenings.

Just wondering now that we have the Cali if we should look at something lighter although we do have a large CadacAtago.jpg

Have seen an atago in action and it is a great item indeed.

The beauty of a Cali for us is - that we can customise it the way we want. If the Atago works well for you, take it along and use it. Forget about getting anything else. I think the base pan is just about 7 kg and in the overall scheme of things, that is just a fraction of 3 tonnes.

However, while adding items, you may want to consider the overall weight that you are adding to the vehicle ... and keep some buffer to ensure you are able to bring back wine from France and Cheese from Cheddar Gorge.

You may just be able to carry both the Atago and the Cadac, and use it as and when required. Of course, will depend on all the other items you plan to carry along with you on your travels.

You may have already come across this thread - https://vwcaliforniaclub.com/threads/best-barbecue.34475/ ... lots of suggestions/options there on alternatives. Some lighter. Some heavier.

Thank you for that - I shall have a nose at that one for sure.

We are used to carrying a lot of stuff and hopefully when have our new Overlanding rig built in the next year or so it won't be a problem as that will only be for longer trips.

Luckily there is only the 2 of us and Digit the Mutt and he is now on a diet :)

We will only be carrying some food, Atago and an awning really so hopefully that's enough to keep the weight down although Alexa would bring more kit than we would ever use. She would prefer an item for each occasion rather than one that can do them all:mute
