Aperture for long luggage

Is there a knack for opening the aperture for long luggage? Does the cover open or come off? I've just bought an excellent wooden ladder from ebay to access the upstairs bed and need to open this aperture for storage.

I just yanked mine off, and have left it off permanently. It’s a useful space.
