I am one year four months post-injury, herniated disc wise. Most of 2024 was spent on the floor in pain. Hence, our last trip in our beloved 2019 VW Cali was September 2023 to Switzerland.

I am getting there. Business as usual with chronic but fading nerve pain. It’s time to book our next epic trip. This time? Austria.

This is the plan… what do you think?

OUTBOUND (Calais → Saalbach via Germany & Austria):
  1. Dinant, Belgium
  2. Cochem, Germany
  3. Baden-Baden, Germany
  4. Lindau (Lake Constance), Germany
  5. Füssen, Germany (Neuschwanstein Castle)
  6. Achensee, Austria
  7. Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria (your destination)

RETURN (Saalbach → Calais via Italy, Switzerland & France):
  1. Lienz, Austria
  2. Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy
  3. Trento, Italy
  4. Lake Como (Menaggio), Italy
  5. Lugano, Switzerland
  6. Lucerne, Switzerland
  7. Colmar, France
  8. Troyes, France
  9. Calais, France (return point)

Lindau is great, very picturesque narrow streets in the centre.

Park Camping Lindau south of the town, just before the Austrian border has a nice vibe and depending on the time of year you can swim in the lake late into the evening watching the sunset. Bregenz just over the Austrian border along an easy cycle path is good for music and culture and has a small cable car up the hill behind which made for a fun bike ride back to the campsite.

There's a good Zeppelin museum at Friedrichshafen if that's your thing.

Our route was via Luxembourg/Strasbourg/ Freiburg.

Looks great
How many days in each stop the big question
We don’t know. But given the time I had last year, and that we’ve not been away for nearly two years in our van, we’re keeping it wide open. We both work for ourselves so can be flexible. Our laptops are all we need!

Very helpful thank you! I’ll tell my husband.
I’m so excited. We’ve plotted the trip this way so we spend no more than three hours between stops. It’s for my back. It’s going to be a big test.
