Auxiliary heater repair and maintenance

Hello
My heater refused to co-operate with me anymore. The fan started to rubble and then stopped for good, fortunately when heater was already cold, so I presume no overheating and burning occured.


Now, I am going to have it repaired with VW, but I think to take the opportunity and perform the heater periodic maintenance in the same time.
Does VW repair the heater or is it to be done by a specialised workshop?

What is it to do? I presume the glow plug is worth to be replaced, and what else?
What is exactly the type of the heater ?, so I can search the web for maintenance information.
