Aviva exclusion warning ⚠️

Cali now sold
My wife works in the insurance industry so read the Aviva policy cover to cover and came a across a gem of an exclusion.

Fire cover is excluded from their standard motor policy if the vehicle has cooking equipment installed. So no cover on the Cali for fire. It doesn’t even say specifically if the fire was caused by cooking so even if you had an engine fire caused say by an electrical fault it looks doubtful they would honour the claim

I’m now looking for a new insurer.......

I had the same with Admiral and LV when I dug deeper !!

I am surprised at the amount of people that insure their Cali with car insurers, you really do need to use the specialist ones like Comfort, Safeguard, Caravan and Motorhome club etc.. as their policies are tailormade for campervans so you know you are covered for every possibilty

Agreed, we only insured with Aviva as we had car insurance with them and were able to add the Cali as a second vehicle, we needed cover quickly when we brought the vehicle. Bearing in mind you can add the Cali online, it’s just listed as a standard vehicle you’d kind of hope such a massive exclusion would be highlighted as an endorsement rather than tucked away on page 16 of the policy booklet

I had a quote from caravan club but it seemed expensive at £454, hopefully Safeguard or comfort come in more reasonable

Aviva underwrites Comfort insurance - I haven't had the chance to go through the policy document yet but hope the fire cover is there.

LV are the same, we were with them for a year and only found out on renewal when we asked, we are now with Safeguard

I have received the documents from LV today and read it from cover to cover there is no mention in my copy of no fire cover if a cooker is present in the vehicle.

Me neither,
I haven't got the full policy to hand but right here in the key facts....
I think it's OK.

Different brokers have different policy from same underwriters. Ie one policy has this exclusion whilst others may not. Yet another insurance pitfall.

Included items in the demands and needs is NOT the same as exclusions. Fire will be included on most policies, however, if there is a standard exclusion in the policy booklet / T&C’s, you will not be covered for fire.

Always worth checking the policy booklet.

So are you saying that even though with comprehensive cover and the fact it says in the policy summary
1) Your policy includes the following significant features and benefits
2) Own damage and fire and theft (excluding glass)

That this may not be the case?
That would be contradictory and they would be wrong to present it like this.
While i'm sure the actual policy details will try to screw you down and wriggle out of anything that could be deemed as negligence on the owners part, I can't believe it will be squirrelled away in therre that you aren't covered because you have cooking facilities.
I'll take a look none the less.

EDIT:
Policy details regarding fire cover exclusion.
Damage resulting from fire or explosion in connection with the on board domestic gas supply to privately converted vehicles where the supply is not fitted or serviced in accordance with the Gas Safety (installations and use) Regulations 1998

You have a Beach, so surely doesn't apply to you as you have no fitted cooker?

It would be brave for an insurer to repudiate a claim for fire that was proven to have arisen from something other than the cooking equipment.

When I rang Aviva they wouldn’t let me add my Cali as they checked and the agent said they don’t cover them. They sent me to Comfort.

Yes, I am aware of that, my comment was really to point out that Aviva would not insure my Cali (despite having a car policy with the) as they told me they don’t cover them. This seems contradictory as others appear to have insured Calis directly with Aviva.

I have a pod with a cooker within it, the agent had to refer it back to underwriters who declined to cover me.

Just to clarify ours is the standard Aviva motor insurance multi car policy. We updated online and the California is listed in the standard VW vehicles that you can select with no referral required. It even lets you add the options like factory alloys etc. It’s a good policy and at sub £300 good value. It’s just the fire exclusion due to fitted cooking equipment that’s the downside. And whilst you might protest that a fire wasn’t caused by the cooking equipment if the vehicle is totally gutted by fire it would be hard to prove so not worth the risk. Hence us looking to reinsure elsewhere. Cheers.

Scenic motorhomes Insurance Through Zenith provide full fire cover and a reasonable cost.
