Cali v Caravan !

Hi all, had an interesting discussion with the owner of a caravan whilst at a site near Dawlish over the weekend. Upon arrival at the campsite we were allocated a "super pitch" which had electric hook up and water (thresh and waste). Whilst getting our awning and everything set up, the owner of the caravan in the next pitch asked why we were in one of these pitches, as it was a bit excessive for our small van. I replied thats what we had been given (probably because we had visited the site a few times over the past couple years), and also that we needed the electric hook up. He then said that he thought these pitches were only for caravans with water and waste points, so I took great pleasure in pointing out that we too had water on board both fresh and waste ! He grumpily walked back to his oversized cardboard box !

I have read a few of these situations now on the board and I'm quite surprised. I can't recall a similar situation myself. Theres often two side to the story but the Caravan owners don't come off to well on this site lol

In regards to your situation.. if you have booked and paid for the pitch then whats their issue?? I don't get where Caravans owner think they have a hierarchy over campervan owners.. I find the psychology of this fascinating.

Do campervan owners give tent campers a hard time?? lol

Don't get me started on this, I have had a similar situation with a caravanner a year back. The problem is some of them love these fully serviced pitches so they can sit in their caravans and watch TV without the need to empty their grey water, they are also hooked up to fresh water meaning the only thing they need to do is empty their loo every few days.

British caravanner are a totally different breed to our continental cousins.

Most important thing to caravanner a in the UK is a satellite dish!!!!

Last time it was Motorhomes on an awning pitch who did not have an awning. How dare someone take up an awning pitch when that could well have been used by a caravan owner who had his 100 metre canvas bag to accommodate.

I have had many happy evenings caravanning, many happy weeks of enjoyment, some memorable times but sadly I have to agree a lot with CG. It does seem that to many the caravan once pitched is the holiday home, not what it allows access to around them, including nice sociable people who just want to chill, enjoy the surroundings, share a laugh, a glass of wine etc.

The only thing I would disagree with CG about is the importance of the satellite dish. Sometimes it plays second fiddle to the importance of the WiFi connection in terms of sufficient bandwidth for streaming all the Television programmes that they watch at home.

Yes the caravan did have a sat/TV dish on top and what looked like a 40" TV set inside. Not sure they left their home from home for the entire weekend either. Totally agree about the social side of Cali owning. We happily chatted to another couple with a T4 and shared places to visit, recommended pubs and also discussed the pros and cons of various different drive away awnings. Really enjoyed our first proper weekend away with our 2 boys (4 years / 9 months). The weather was kind for setting up and then packing up. But really the rain didn't matter in between anyway.

We rarely opt for the neat rows of hard standing and electrical hookup so we're with a different crowd

I quite like staying on the premier pitches. You pay for the pitch make the most if it. But I generally find the best entertainment comes either as the pull up to set up the circus tent size awning, or the Sunday morning taking it down and trying to pack it up.
This is where all the fun happens the swearing the falling out and the right do it yourself shouts come from.
Ahh how easy it is to just wind the awning away press the button to lower the roof unplug the electric and sit and watch with a cold drink from the fridge..
Bliss....

I think the envious looks give it away. It like the first time you see somebody put up a khyam motor dome classic when your fighting the poles of your tunnel awning. Ha ha. ( yes I've been that person)

Us too. You get that bit more space and the hardstanding is useful for parking on in case of bad (muddy) conditions. We've been caravanners in the past (plus numerous tents, trailer tents etc.) but have always seen ourselves as campers first and foremost keen to be out and about as much as possible (TV is banned when we are away).
Many (not all) caravanners I suspect will not have been campers prior to buying their caravan and what they want is for it to be a home away from home. We laugh at them disappearing into their 'van to stick the telly on as evening arrives, just as they probably laugh at us sitting outside braving the conditions for as long as we can stand!

Need to give caravaners some slack, you would be miserable if you had to tow a plastic box on wheels around everywhere. That's why caravaners don't give their caravans a cheery name ...
