So the cat warning has come on and needs to be investigated
Phoned the local VW dealer and yes that is important and needs looking at urgent but the earliest they can do anything is August.
A friend has lent me a foxwell automaster pro to plug in and get the actual error code, but I've not used such a device before so is it simple to do? And would the information be useful to get the problem sorted by an independent VW specialist?

Hi Spitzie,

can you post a photo of the light ?

can you provide a bit more detail, background, when you noticed the light on, (driving conditions etc) what colour is the warning, flashing or not etc.

any recent works carried out on the van ?

short journeys regularly?

when was the last Regen you were aware of ?

when was your last AD blue fill,
what is the current add blue range shown on the MFD ?

Do you have VW assist ?

Sorry I can't post a photo
But warning light is the steady on orange cat convertor, looks like an engine block.
It came while driving on the motor during a 10 mile journey.
The Cali had a full service on the 26th June.
I plugged in the foxwell unit and it says it's the
Exhaust gas recirculation cooling system performance P2457/$07E8

The light is an Engine Management light,
could be various things when this is lit up.

the code P2457 is an EGR cooling fault code

Check the coolant level
how much is in it at cold ? Look for the marking on thd side of the expansion tank, the pink fluid should be above Min when Cold ?

report back

edit: have you restarted the van since the light came on ? has the light gone out ?

Sorry for the late reply, family life got in the way.
The coolant level is fine, no signs of emulsion in oil and the light stays on after restarting the engine.
I chatted with a mechanic friend who owns a transporter, she suggested that the sensor is most like clogged with carbon, but best to get it looked as soon as by a garage.
Thanks and I'll report back when it's fixed.

Finally it's fixed after a bit of a saga.
The problem was that an actuator had coked up and was barely moving.
The garage also suggested that the heater was also replaced at the same time, to improve the engine efficiency, as it could be do as part of the job.
This unit that needed replacing is on the right side of the block(as you look), below all the coolant pipes, which needed removing first.
Left the Cali at the garage the evening before the genuine VW parts arrived.
The next day came the phone call, the Cali had been stripped ready but there was a problem. One part box was correctly labelled on the outside, the part on the inside was for a different engine and not compatible. There wasn't another part available and it had to be back ordered. The garage cleaned up the original part, reset the error code and put everything back together.
The Cali went down to camp at Newquay and back without the warning returning. Got to BTCC at Thruxton camping, but starting the engine to return home, on comes the warning.light.
Finally after 4 weeks the correct part is available (apparently it's been difficult to import parts from the EU). So now the Cali is fixed.
The garage were very good, they charged me only for the labour on the day it was fixed and cost of the parts at the beginning of August as the prices had increased at the end of the month.
