After worrying about being decapitated by the tailgate open with 3 bikes I used a steel clothesline prop this summer - which was OK but didn't inspire confidence. Today at Aldi they had some fairly heavy duty 3m telescopic window cleaning poles (with hose connection) reduced to £5. I sawed off the top section, but kept the plastic tightener on the end. With the 2 bits fully extended this bit either just reaches the latch of the tailgate fully open, but also can slot over the rubber grommet halfway along the edge of the tailgate - which I think will be more secure as it would be difficult to dislodge when In place.
Made of alloy, seems fairly strong and tightens well and the icing on the cake is that it fits in the bottom of the tailgate chairs compartment.

Also, when not using it for the tailgate, you can use it as a central rafter to reduce the risk of rain pooling in the wind out awning :thumb
