Obviously that is a stupid amount but you'd have to be pretty silly to want to drive in Paris anyway. The traffic is mental, they are trying all ways to reduce it. It already makes sense to park outside Paris and get the train in.

1.6 tonnes isn't a lot for a modern car - every single BMW currently made is over 1.6tnne as is every Mercedes & even a Renault Megan.

Only very small cars like the VW Up! are under the limit.

With our BMW i3 I doubt I could go back to an ICE car but I’m also feeling like that about the carbon fibre and plastic construction. Not sure I would like a heavy steel car that will ultimately rust. (I love the fact the Cali is galvanised). Why do we make cars out of steel? Strong and cheap but also very heavy and rusts.

Weight has such an obvious effect on range and interesting that that is what Paris is focussing on. They could have focused on fuel efficiency or emissions.

I was a little shocked that a law like that was passed with so little turnout, only 5.3% of the 1.3 million eligible voted and passed with less than 55% majority. Clearly fits with the Mayoral agenda I suppose.

Need to read the small print.

Thats because it's the Paris residents voting as to whether people that don't live in Paris should pay more whilst they themselves are exempt.

So if you have to commute to Paris for work, which car are you going to buy a German BMW or a French Citroen ?

It depends what weight is used for the classification - MIRO, MAM, kerb weight, Unladed Weight etc etc.
I havn't seen anything that states which is used, I had assumed it would be MAM - the weight of a fully loaded car as that figure is on the logbook & shown under the bonnet, all the others seem to have differing definitions.

If its MAM - almost every car is over the 1.6tnne if its Kerbwieght then as as you say the mid size French cars might just be under.

Probably quicker to get train, metro / bike...and less chance of damage / theft.

A small handful of the population don't seem that great at parking, treat it a bit like bumper cars given the amount of dents, cracked bumpers, cracked wing mirrors. The passenger will often get out to assist the driver into the undersized parking space with unique hand signals. Passengers seem to enjoy smacking their doors into the car next to them as they get out.

stupid law: even a tesla 3 , the car they want us all to drive, weighs more than 1600kg. When is a car a suv ? SUV is a marketing term, there is no legal definition for an SUV like there is for camper I think.
