I have a similar device that I use with a carista app (but not a carista dongle) works fine, also have a vagcom unit that works too.

Yes, Ive used an app called Rev to reset codes in the past, Carista also works and seems to be more advanced for changing options.

I think I used them with an Elm wifi device OBDII device.

Thanks Matt. So what can the dongle etc do? Is it just to get generic codes or does it do the VW specific ones?

Both I used it in my Alfa and also with my VW. Obd2 codes are industry standard.

Great. I had a look on eBay and the dongle is priced anything from three quid to twelve quid for what look like the same piece of kit. Do you need software to run it?

Yes you need software, for iOS i have Rev and Carista. Rev is more diagnostic and Carista has extra features for changing settings.
