Emma Raducanu

Incredible to qualify then win the US Open weeks after sitting her A levels
($2,500,000!!)

Amazing to see someone so young so composed. Generation Z is alive and well, showing grit and determination on a day that is so synonymous with the best and worst of us all. The future is bright.

Definitely well done, but I'm amused by the hysteria generated in the U.K. by a girl born in Canada to Chinese and Romanian parents. Even the Queen has joined in.
If the qualifying criteria for other sports is adopted, isn't she also eligible to represent the country of her birth or of her parents birth?

As they were both from Commonwealth countries why couldn't the Queen join in?
When it comes to Tennis Grand Slams the contestants are not representing any country they are competing as individuals.
Only in the Olympics do players represent their country, or the Davis Cup for Men's tennis. There maybe other inter-country competitions.

Isn't the difference here that she has chosen to enhusitically identify as representing the country she has lived in since she was 2 A very American way of expressing her identity, proud to be part of her home nation.

Reminiscent of Norman Tebbit's "cricket test", do you support the team from your home country or the one your grandparents once came from? How often do we hear of a proud "insert country here person" who has never lived in that country?

For us to be a truly integrated country she is setting a great example.

I don’t see anything wrong with people supporting the country of their heritage.

She is free to participate irrespective of the nationality of the contestants. I just think that once upon a time she would not have tried to curry favour by commenting. Modern times.

Agree, we can't be stuck in the past.

I don’t care where she’s from.
She was great, well done.
Her nationality or allegiance is irrelevant. People are good at something or less so irrespective of nation. ‘Nationalism the Measles of Mankind’ : Albert Einstein

Speaks fluent Mandarin too.
She’s going places on a grand scale.

I think she should be given an extra special award for not grunting / screaming every time she hit the ball.

I think she will receive extra ¥¥¥ for addressing the 1.3 billion people of her mother’s homeland in fluent Mandarin. I wonder if she speaks Romanian too: that would be another 19.5 million people to charm.

She does.

Women's tennis has a history of top flight teens going awry with their new found fame and finance. Some spectacularly so.
I don't think I see this happening here, fingers crossed.

'fraid if you listen closely it's all there on the serve and on some other seriously solid shots.
it's the only fault she seems to have .
:)

I read today that China are considering giving her honorary citizenship.

I read today that China are considering giving her honorary citizenship.

I have a niece and nephew who have Chinese citizenship. They need to keep their British citizenship quiet from the Chinese authorities as dual nationality is not allowed. I have not heard of exceptions being made, but can understand why China might want to claim Raducanu as their own.

In addition to citizenship, each person in China has Hukou registration which determines access to housing, education, and medical treatment in a specific region or city.

Well done for an impressive ‘individual’ performance at a young age, not however unknown in women’s tennis. In fact even in mens, Borris Becker was 17 when he won at Wimbledon. What is a little OTT is the way ‘Nations Politicos’ try to piggyback onto what is ultimately a professional sport and individual success.
