We have a be California TDI 2010. A noise in the engine suddenly began made worse by increasing revs but not losing power. We have a trip (3 hours) and wonder if anyone has an idea as to cause

A think just a tad more info might help!

Perhaps a vague description of the noise?

It’s a sort of regular clattering - quite difficult to describe - did you ever fix a piece of cardboard to the spokes of you bike to make a sound!! Best I can do!

Post a recording of the noise.

Switch off and check your oil level before you do anything else!

As Alan says, a recording of the noise will help.

If the noise is upon starting the engine, open the bonnet and look under to see if you can identify the general location of the noise.

For posting a recording, best to use your phone camera to record an audio or a video (preferred) of the engine bay as someone revs the engine to hear the change in tone.

Upload this video to YouTube and then share from there. or put on to a Google drive/similar and share a link to the file.

Whereabouts are you? Perhaps someone local on here might be able to assist.
