European Assist (what is covered)

2017 Camper is insured with NFU and yesterday asked if I required European breakdown cover with them; I will get back to them as I was not sure.
I cannot find a definitive post on this site that states what is and (importantly) what is not covered by the VW Assist linked to my vehicle. I will be off to France (and maybe wider afield) for several / 4 weeks at the end of June so will be very grateful for any info and advice. Many thanks in advance.

Have you checked the VW Assistance Handbook? Should have had one with the Vehicle + a Card.

Thanks, WG. I forgot about this handbook and have cast an eye over it. Seems to me that there are VW assist caveats and particularly "Our absolute discretion" that are a little confusing. My concern is what happens if there is a breakdown on French motorway system, and any repatriation of occupants and vehicle within the 5 year VW Vehicle Warranty period.
Has anyone broken down on a French motorway and did they get compensated their costs after being towed off?
If the vehicle is in warranty on breakdown is repatriation and /or replacement vehicle to continue travels something that is straightforward?

If you conk out on a French motorway you have to call from one of the fixed emergency phones. They will arrange a tow off the motorway and then you can call VW Assist or whoever your breakdown operator is. I don't know if VW reimburse you for the cost of towing off but I doubt it.

You might have the 5 yr Extended Warranty but VW Assist is ONLY for 3 yrs with a new vehicle, but can be extended for 2 yrs at a cost of about £150.

Some have had problems with warranty on UK vehicles as we have 3 years. Continent only 2 years. Case of keeping bills to reclaim from UK end on return.

Yes and you have to lodge the the claim wirh a UK dealer within 14 days of the invoice unless its changed recently
