Hi In New Zealand to get a self-containment certificate for three people you need to have a waste water tank of 36 Litres has anyone got any ideas on how to increase the capacity of the 30 L tank to 36 L. We need three people as we have one child with us.

Put a sealed 6 L tank in line between the Sink Waste Outlet and the built in 30 L vehicle tank. When the 6 L tank fills it will overflow into the 30 L tank. Total capacity 36 L.

Good idea, but where to find a 6l water tank with an inlet and outlet?

Here in the UK I would look for a water bottle in a camping or caravan shop and the plumbing pipes conections from a DIY shop.

To avoid losing storage space, fit an extra tank under the van above the splash shields and feed the existing tank into that. As it is waste water any suitable plastic bottle would do. A small flat caravan waste water tank may work, held in place with metal straps similar to the fuel tank.

Drain both tanks via the new one as it is lower than the fitted one.

The existing overflow would work for both tanks once the original stop tap handle is removed so nothing seeped back inside the van via the stop cock being accidentally knocked open.

Alternatively remove the old stop tap and extend the waste overflow.

Suggest you get it certified on the basis it’s being used by two people.
Then there’s no need to increase volume of the waste tank.

Hi Kiwicamper

Did you need to have a valve and hose put on your waste water pipe for nz self containment? Has been suggested we need to do that?

You do not need a valve as the shut off valve on the waste tank in the van is sufficient.
However you need to adapt the waste tank outlet so that the waste tank can be emptied into a dump station.
(The only waste water we will be emptying will be washing up water so it is a bit OTT but if you want to get certified as being self contained this is what you have to do).
We fitted a 19mm nylon hosetail to the existing waste tank outlet, secured by a ss hoseclip.
To this was screwed a 20-25mm nylon socket which has a male Camlock fitting.
A removable cap also was required on the end of the Camlock fitting.
You now have an assembly that protrudes around 150mm below the underside of the van.
When emptying the tank you need a 3m length of 25mm dia bilge hose which has a female Camlock fitting on one end. This can be stored coiled up in a bag.
I purchased the fittings from HCD Flow Technology but Burnsco also stock these fittings.

Really helpful thanks Kiwikamper
Do you just push the 19mm hose tail into the existing grey water pipe and secure it with hose clip. The pipe on the Cali looks oval whereas the nylon hosetail is round?

Also as the assembly protrudes a bit, have you had any problems with that?

Thanks for your help

The bilge hose from the waste tank is round. It helps to soften the end of the hose with hot water before pushing in the hose tail. Once you push the hose tail into the pipe the serrations on the hose tail mean you can’t pull it out. Remember to thread the hose clip onto the bilge hose first.
Yes the finished assembly does protrude down a bit but this hasn’t caused any problems so far.
I don’t anticipate that we will ever use the 3m length of 25mm hose for emptying our small amounts of occasional sink water.
Good luck.

Thanks
Are you enjoying your Cali? How’s it going?

We got ours in January and have used it a lot as a ‘day van’ when taking our boys to sports events etc

Have had overnight stays but so far always plugged in at camp sites with facilities as always good to have a shower and flushing toilet! Not sure we would freedom camp often in van this size

Fridge good

Our boys tell us upstairs bed is comfortable
Downstairs a Duvalay sleeping bag on top of the vw comfort mattress is super comfy.

Turned auxiliary heater on the other night in Hamilton when 5 overnight.... bit smelly and smoke to start with but settled down

A5EF425A-8BEF-4BBB-AB4D-AF0DC4C50FF8.jpeg We’re loving the freedom to take off at short notice and be fairly independent.
To date we have mainly camped on friends or families’ lawns or campgrounds.
Since last October we’ve travelled around 8,200 km and had 82 bed nights in Cloe.
Had a two week trip in the South Island in Feb which was wonderful. Cloe made an excellent support vehicle for the Coast to Coast event, accommodating my son, daughter in law and their two children. Photo is taken at Klondyke Corner camp site at the end of day one.
Found it difficult to buy AdBlue at a reasonable price, huge variations across the country and many service stations haven’t heard of it.
I like sleeping upstairs, more width but a bit cooler at night.
Haven’t used the diesel heater yet other than to test that it works. However I can see us using it through the winter.
Currently getting around 7.8 litres/100km according to the MFD computer.
Still haven’t worked out how to set the tyre pressures for the pressure monitoring function.
It’s great having a decent sized fridge. Most of our cooking to date has been outside using a gas stove or in campground kitchens.
Looking forward to a trip round the East Cape during winter.

Awesome , sounds great
Although we got our Cali this year, it was MY 17 so no adblue

Also 132 not 150

Was 11 months old one owner so 12% off new price

Sounds like you havnt used the porta potti much either despite self containment!

We are going fishing to twizel canals in July so will test the heater. Was there last year in hired campervan, -7 overnight!

East cape is so cool

We live in BOP , so not far from us

Regards
