Hi all,

Alex here - I've owned a 2015 T5 California since August '23. He is called 'Zephyr' and he has been a total life game changer. Since then, I've found these forums to be incredibly useful as I've come across new 'head-scratching' moments such as split awnings, seized bike rack arms and water cylinder concerns!

A minor head-scratch for anyone able to help...
I recently found that the arms of the original thule bike rack had seized up meaning that one of the arms separated from the housing in the black tightening knob. To resolve this, I was just about to resolve myself to order a new arm or two, when I came across someone recommending removing the black knob only and work on the bolt with better visibility. This worked brilliantly as I decided to use the black knob on the 4th arm attachment as a replacement immediately and then have since ordered a replacement one from Campervantastic.

Im still struggling with the locking 3rd arm of the bike rack...
Firstly, am I correct in saying that the black knob will turn freely when locked? I know this is the case with the T6 version but wanted to be sure with the T5 version. Currently, it can turn freely (presumably when locked) or is completely stuck. I think that means it is seized where it is refusing to budge rather than locked. Given that it is harder to remove this one, does anyone have any recommendations for freeing this up or whether I've missed something in my tinkering. I've already tried to work wd40 into the screw mechanism but to no avail.

Any advice welcome!
Alex

Welcome to the forum !

You’re right, on T6 when locked the black head just spins. Can’t answer for T5, but this also was the case on a Thule roof bike rack we had years ago. That too seized on me (after about 10 years of service). I persisted with WD40 and try to move in and out, and it eventually and begrudgingly came free. I found the screwed rod was really rusted, so I took it apart, wire brushed it and then greased it.

Thanks for your reply. That's reassuring to know - perhaps I'll stick with it for now and see if some it frees over time. Is it possible to remove the arm from the other side where the arm attaches to the rack itself? If so, I'm thinking that I would have more luck with it being detached?
