We are planning a trip to Austria in July and were wondering if anyone has any tips or recommendations? We will be crossing the channel from Dover to Dunkirk. We were thinking of Luxembourg as a stop over and possibly some where near `Munich. Any recommendations for sites on the way and also in Austria would be welcomed. I note that France, Germany and Austria require you to have ‘Green Zone’ badges - is this necessary?

Hi @Alex Currie, welcome to the forum! We too are planning our first European trip to Slovenia/Croatia and intend to go through Germany and Austria to get there. Below are some sites and POIs that i've bookmarked but i must stress I don't have first hand experience of them yet.

The Ferry from Dover to Calais and then head towards Strasbourg via Reims and Metz. We're hoping to get as far as Strasbourg but travelling with two four year olds anything can happen. The aim is to get to Lake Konstanz and pick up the German Alpine Road (GAR).

Half way along the GAR you can drop into Austria and there is Lake Achensee and I marked the following site as a potential stop: https://www.camping-achensee.com/.

Further west i liked the look of this place that fellow forum member stayed at this year, looks like a great stop for a ski trip: https://www.camping-arlberg.at/.

Resources

Have a look at the following resources as they have helped us to get an idea of where to go and where not to go.

Maverick, thanks for the info. In many ways I find the planning is half the fun. Keep researching!

Hi & welcome along. We (2 adults, 2 kids) travelled to Austria last Summer - from Ireland via Cherbourg. We travelled to Strasbourg en route down & came back through Luxembourg. Instead of going in to Munich we stayed in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Camping Resort Zugspitze which was lovely (worth paying the €13 extra to get your own private bathroom!). In Austria, our 2 favorite spots were Camping Birkenstrand in Wolfgangsee and the wonderfully named Camping Hell in Zillertal, which was really wow. On the way back, we travelled up through Germany and stayed in Trier before heading back through Luxembourg & Belgium. Feel free to have a look through our blog for our itinerary & some photos www.vwcalifornia.wordpress.com
Wishing you happy & safe travels!

UPDATED: Hi we ski camped at camping arlberg just outside st Anton this winter. Good facilities and friendly owners. The pictures of it in summer look great. Best of luck with your trip.

As another poster has suggested Camping Hopfensee at Fussen is worth a stay. Right by the lake. Cycle into Fussen and into the Neuschwanstein (chitty chitty bang bang) castle.

Thank you all for your excellent comments and recommendations - who needs Tripadvisor when you have a community such as VW California Club? We have also decided to drop down to Italy for a few nights at Lake Como, Camping La Riva in Sorico, a Caravan and Motorhome recommended site. Will keep you posted upon our return!
Thanks for all your assistance.
Kind regards
Alex and Yvonne.

I’m currently here.
Loads to do, visit the glacier, aqua dome or pop over to Imst and hit the Alpine Coaster. Longest in the world.
Plus loads of mountain biking...

Can thoroughly recommend http://www.camping-eschbach.de at Wasserburg, near LIndau. Small, clean simple site next to the Lake. Lido next door, nice n' easy cycle rides, places to eat etc. Love it there.
