Can anyone tell me the manufacturer and perhaps the model number of the Grand California refrigerator ? I'm trying to see if I can disable the freezer. That space would be more useful for me as a cool space for vegetables, etc. Plus it would lessen the annoying frost buildup. (But maybe the cold from the freezer is necessary to maintain the overall temperature of the refrigerator. Dunno, but I'd like to find out for myself.) Thanks.

Hi believe is a Dometic.
Try lowering the temperature to the fridge, appreciate your climate is warmer but mine works very effectively and no frost build up.

Thanks again, Jester. Good to hear that a properly functioning unit works well. Among numerous other problems with my nearly-new 600, my refrigerator does not regulate itself properly- no variance in temperature regardless of the setting. I actually turn it off at night to avoid freezing the contents. I haven't found a VW dealer in Spain (especially the awful dealer I bought it from) who has a clue about the camper portion of a GC so I will wait until I can get to Germany with my laundry list of problems. I know I need a new Truma regulator module for the refrigerator. (In any case, I'd still like the extra real estate for cooling, not freezing.)

Until then, this forum and California Chris are godsends.

All the best from sunny Albania...

Make sure the thermostat sensor isn’t touching the walls of the freezer. If you pack it full you could have accidentally pushed the sensor.

Hmm, I can't find the sensor. Should I be looking inside the freezer? If so, all I see is the walls. Can you give me a better idea of where I should be looking and what the sensor looks like? Big thanks.

Hi,
It’s a fridge from Webasto . Exclusively build for VW. There is unfortunately no useful information about this fridge to download from the Webasto site.

Not actually seen myself I read it on a German forum. From what I understand you have to make sure the fridge middle/top shelf is pushed all the way in. It does seem to be a consistent issue that everyone’s is running to cold. I just leave mine on night mode most of time.

Hello ,

This is what I found in the German forum about the freezer.

Lots of members are unhappy with GC freezer . One member did some very interesting measurements and wrote the following text.

The refrigerator has only one cooling circuit, the compressor is controlled based on the temperature in the freezer compartment. This can be set in the range from -8 ° (level 1, night mode) to -17 ° (level 5).

The temperature in the drawer underneath "results" from falling cold and is largely determined by the outside temperature and the frequency with which the drawer is opened.

If so, the behavior of the refrigerator would probably be state of the art. It would of course be good if you could also control the temperature in the drawer without using the freezer compartment, then the battery would also be less stressed. With only one cooling circuit, however, independent temperature control of both zones (drawer / freezer compartment) is probably not technically possible.

One forum member insulated the freezer compartment a bit better (sealing) an put some thermal packs inside with positive effect.

We ordered our GC600 three weeks ago , so I can't experiment with the fridge on the moment :)

Thought night mode only worked for 6/8 hours

We 're experiencing the same issue with the fridge of our GC 600 (1y old). It worked well at the start, but upon our third trip, there seems no control of temperature anymore. It keeps running and draining the leisure battery. Even turning on the"night"mode doesn't seem to help. So no offroad camping while in Sweden. We live in Belgium - our GC was imported from Germany. Does anyone know of any GC specialist dealers in Belgium to get this problem solved? Thanks in advance for any help! KR, Herwig
