Anyone have any recommendations for nice spots to stay - either aires or proper sites - about 2 or 3 hours drive from the French end of the tunnel? Heading down to Switzerland so probably using the A26.

Lac d’orient is normally our first stop on way south for summer hols.

Avoid Saint-Omer, The Camping Car Park Barrier machine took 20 euros, eat my membership card and refused me entry, suffice it to say I am not a fan of Camping Car Park, apparently upon my next visit I will be issued a new card when I try to access a site! As if that is going to happen!

Stayed at this place ,
Run by owners (onsite)

nice lake side pitches, (fishing)
Small indoor pool,
restaurant & small shop onsite.

Village food shop (sells take away pizza) & cafes within few minutes.

Nice walks (site suggested walks )

Very Large barn: showers, washing up and washing machines etc.
Upstairs pool table and wet weather retreat , books , games etc.

Site of a WW2 grave site / memorial, short walk away.

That just brought back a long buried memory of my French GCSE oral exam when I had to do exactly that task... somehow I forgot the French word for lake and asked for a spot by the sea instead.

Appreciate the suggestions, will look into them all.

And that reminds me of the time that a French man once had a problem with us, for reasons we’re still not sure about. Anyway, he couldn’t speak English and so I used my distant memory of GCSE French. My daughter, who has better, more recent GCSE French told me afterwards that I managed to call him a “cow” (vache) when I was questioning why he was so angry (fache). It didn’t really matter, the body language did the heavy lifting and he seemed to see my 2 points in the end ✌.

Laon was stunning….. great campsite, ace pool. Small ancient citadel on a rock just behind….. abs brilliant!

The municipal site in Epernay is very good. 3hrs from Calais. We stayed there a few weeks ago.

Have a look at Le Touquet.

About an hour SW on the coast and a very nice area.
Haven’t picked out a site ourselves as we normally hotel it, but it is our routine stop whenever we go over to France.

Quite easy to drop back SE to the A26 also, and good road systems throughout..

This summer we used Camping Val-de-Vesle, a smart site south of Reims, nice cycle along the canal into the City; And and a small site - Camping des Marais, close to Tilques - 45 mins from Calais, interesting area of waterways to explore and good shops nearby. Would use both again.

Camping St Claire at Neufchatel en Bray. About 40 kms from Dieppe and just above Rouen. Hour and half from Calais. Beautiful site, helpful owner, restaurant in the high season, E LECLERC just down the road for those important pickups before you go home.

There is a camping-car car park in Arras with electric hookups , gray water drain and a toilet/shower. It’s cheap, about 10 euro for the night and from there a short walk to the centre. See picture for details.

Vivier aux Carpes near St Quentin - we stayed there a couple of years ago. V good medium-sized site. Boulangerie van visited every morning when we were there. Not too far from autoroute.

Pick any village around Reims, pitch up in the square/outside of the Boulanger ready for breaky.
Just make sure you don’t arrive the day before market day as you can wake-up surrounded by market stalls and cross market stall owners. You won’t get away until after 12 o’clock
