I’m aware of fairly old posts on this subject but with no real reference to where ( if at all ) this can be carried out.
My understanding is that’Habitation Checks’, like those carried out on Motorhomes, are not really necessary for VW Campervans, however it appears that some reference is made to ‘Gas installation’ checks. Also mention of a 3 yearly requirement for this Gas check.
Is this something that lots of us are having done and is it that we personally just weren’t made aware of the requirement.
If it is needed where is it done, are some VW dealerships doing it… we live near Glasgow but have chosen servicing and MOT’s to be done in Edinburgh. In fact next one is plus Cam belt and Water pump…. should/ could it be done then ?

We viewed all of the California Chris videos when we got our van, and he mentioned that people ask about habitation checks, but he didn’t know of a requirement and his dealership didn’t do them. There is a gas label on the boot when new, and as I understand this is a requirement in Germany but not the UK. Saying all that, I’m sure you’ll find a Motorhome / caravan workshop that will quote you to do a check!

You have a gas bottle in your van with a regulator on top and some rubber tubes that go to the burner. These could leak. A check would try to identify leaks and for a price, replace some of the rubber tubes.

I’ve had my California since 2009 and never had it done. VW Campersales where I bought the van even offer to do it. I thought about it a couple of years ago. Never bothered.

Part of the reason is that the design of the gas bottle storage, with a tight lid and a hole below for any gas to escape outside the van. I think this is a good design.

So do I think my rubber pipes may degrade? They aren’t in the sun or exposed at all. Not sure. I suppose I’ve decided to leave things well alone.

I think in Germany the checks may be obligatory.

I replaced they cylinder hose as a precaution due to it having a “use by date” label.

Not needed. Do gas checks with a tin of leak spray if you must.
getting it done by a caravan specialist is just a waste of money.
