Help with the control panel

I was out in the Cali at the weekend and set the fridge to be on and set the temperature and drove off. I did however turn off the control panel.
When I reached my destination (30 mins or so) it was clear the fridge was not working, so I set it again but this time left the control panel on.
The fridge worked fine.
Therefore, to keep the fridge on do I need to keep the control panel on all the time? What happens when I take the key out? Will the fridge continue to work?

Hi mate
You are right to get the fridge to work you need to leave the display on
Removing the ignition key will make no difference
