I read a thread on this site a while ago regarding importing a new Cali from Germany using a company that does reimporting. ie They export the van to Italy for a day from Germany, and then back to Germany, which significantly lowers the price in some way. I can't re-find the thread. If anyone has imported a vehicle using a company from Germany that does this, or can direct me to a thread about this, could you let me know?

I'm looking at my options.

Many thanks!

I used mobile.de to find the Cali I wanted and purchased it via LHD car supermarket, they imported and registered it in the UK.

On the german forum some people report to buy calis from Austria as this seems to be cheaper than directly from german dealers, apparently because Austria has a lower tax on them.

True. We imported our Cali from Autohaus Schweiger in Reutte. These guys are specialists for reimports. The Austrians have to pay a big share of taxes, that's why VW needs to put the vans cheaper on the market.

hi can you tell me some more about how you went about importing your van im looking into it myself regards chinny

I have been looking into this as well. Found these germans that import from austria (without saying it's from austria, but studying their price lists and options reveals that).

Comparing is rather hard, some options are standard which are not in other countries.
In the end I noticed the price difference, compared to a Belgian dealer offering 8-10% isn't that much. Except for one thing: they have package deals on options (luxury package), which we don't (yet?) have in Belgium.

I think they might be creating package deals on options in all countries, if sales start to dip due to T6 rumours. I guess I'll wait a couple of months to see if it arrives here in Belgium too.

Too bad delivery times are now > 6 months. Getting late for summer 2015.

Sorry for "reanimating" an old thread, but I´m in the process of importing a Cali from Austria (Schweiger too) and would really appreciate a bit of help from Mountaindancer, if he happens to read this.

How did you collect your Cali? Getting Austrian temporary plates is proving more difficult than anticipated, a tip would be most welcome! Thanks in advance

I've just bought mine from Germany and the dealer sorted my insurance plates for me. 100€ for 5 days enough to get yo home.

Thanks Splitmike. Indeed in Germany it´s a fairly straightforward process, you can even order the plates on the internet and have them delivered to you. The Germans are clearly more used to foreigners buying cars from there and importing them themselves.

Austria is a different matter altogether. There is very little information on how to apply for export plates, and only in German. In the end, it´s as simple as contacting one of the insurance companies that double as "Zulassungstelle", they provide you with the plates and insurance, so it isn´t that difficult after all. Be aware that the prices are pretty hefty though.

I know that many people (especially Germans) do buy theír Californias from Schweiger in Austria and pick them with German temporary plates. It´s cheap and simple, but it has a BIG drawback: you end up driving an Austrian car with German plates, so you´re actually not covered by the insurance. It´s up to each and everyone to decide if they´re willing to take the risk, I think it´s just not worth it.

Hope this is useful for anyone considering importing from an Austrian dealer (Autohaus Schweiger most likely). Incidentally, the dealer didn´t really have much idea about the whole process, apparently they´re just to used to people resorting to German plates. Otherwise they´re very recommendable.
