Instrument lights working intermittently

The speedometer & Rev counter lighting has been working most of the time but recently has started going off for several seconds. Yesterday it was off most of the time. In the evening I turned on the ignition the two dials lit & then immediately went out. The dimming switch does not appear to alter the lights at all.
