Hi all,
Question for those of you living in the Republic of Ireland - where are you insuring your Californias?
Thanks in advance, G

Hi there, I'm with Dolmen Insurance Brokers, D5 & I'm aware od a company also close Stuart Insurances also in Dublin. I'm up for renewal in September & feel I can get better quotes but would also like more names of companies that insure campers in Ireland.
If anyone els in Ireland can suggest alternatives to Dolmen or Stuarts it would be great!

I am with Dolmen (Axa) as well.

I believe that there are only two agencies who provide insurance for California camper vans in Ireland.

The van is my only car, so the insurance price went up a good bit, which was disappointing. I need to renew in November hoping that maybe Stewart can offer something a bit cheaper.

If somebody is aware of another camper van insurance company in Ireland please let me know.

Regards,
Eberhard

I am little worried these days about my Motorhome insurance cover. Actually, I owned a new American Motorhome and comparing static caravan insurance at the UK site. Not found a good site that offers to compare insurance quotes for California based users. Can you guys refer anyone?

Hello Lilly,

are you looking to insure the van in UK ore Ireland? In Ireland it seems that there are only two companies (brokers) who offer camper van insurance (please see info above). In the UK there might be more, but I am not sure about this. Maybe somebody from the UK will pick up your query and get back to you.

Regards,
Eberhard

Thanks for your kind response. Actually, I am looking for California insurers that offer cheap quotes for used motorhome insurance.

Lily, you do know this forum is for Volkswagen "California model" campervans as in Mini "Cooper" etc. and nothing to do with motorhomes or the state of California??

Here is a pic of a VW California.

We've just purchased a new California Ocean. I called my current insurance broker (I'm insured with RSA) and they said I could transfer my current car insurance over, no problem. I was under the impression that only Dolmen, Stuarts and Richardsons were the only companies offering insurance here in Ireland. I'm not complaining but hope down the line I don't run into problems.

Hi, I ended up going with Dolmen insurance and they have been fantastic to deal with - super easy and accommodating, and best of all, my insurance has come way down in price - quartered. The worries I had were that I wouldn't be able to drive it as my main car / daily driver and that I would have limited mileage. Neither of those were an issue.
Best wishes with your new Ocean :)

Thanks. I will possibly sell my car and use the VW California as our main vehicle. Dolmen quoted in the region of €830 if it's my only vehicle or €350 as my second vehicle.

Good evening,

Yes, organize insurance for the camper van is not easy. It cost me a lot of trouble back in November 2017.

My car insurance at the time denied to insure the camper van. Then I rang almost all Irish car insurer. None of them accepted to insure the camper van.

Checked then with Google and came across Dolmen and Stewart. I contacted both and Dolmen was simply easier to deal with.

I made it clear in writing, that the camper van is my daily drive (work, shopping etc.), but I am a named driver on my wifes car insurance. This was no problme with Dolmen (Axa) and I arranged the insurance for EUR 330 (as far as I can remember).

Beside both insurance broker mentioned above I was not aware that somebody else will insure camper van. Could be interesting to get another quote.

In November I will have to renew the insurance. At that point again I will put it in writing that the camper van is my only vehicle used for daily drives. If there is not a huge change in cost, I won't bother to contact Stewart.

Best of luck with your new camper van. I wish you all the best, free roads, warm weather, free camp sites and cheap VW services. Let me know how you getting on.

Happy Califnornia,
Eberhard

Thanks for your reply. I received an email from my current car insurance company (I asked her to confirm in writing) that to swap my policy over from my car to the California would cost an extra €80 until December when my policy is due for renewal. I gave her the reg of the California and the details came up on her screen which I confirmed. When asked is it for commercial use, I replied no, private use. I was expecting her to say "sorry we don't insure campers" but there was no issue.

Well, maybe things have changed. This would be a good thing because it drives competition and (hopefully) keeps the cost down. Have I said that I won't complain of what I pay now.

Certainly I will check with "standard" insurance companies first before I renew with Dolmen.

Regards,
Ebehrard

I too am with Dolmen Ins, at something like 345 euro. The Cali is my daily drive, and this was made clear to Dolmen. My husband and 25 yr old son are named drivers on my policy at no extra cost. I am also named driver on my husband’s Ins. After years of paying ridiculous insurance subs it is great to have a reasonable fee.

Apart from Dolmen and Stuart, am not aware of any other companies who insure camper.

Has anything changed on the Irish insurance market for camper vans? My van is about to land so I'm going to start looking.

Dolmen and Stuart are still around so I'll try them anyway. I've also randomly done an online quote on the AA website (it showed up when I did a Google search for camper van insurance). They have the VW California with all the trims listed and didn't seem to have a problem with the value of the van (when I tried to get a quote with my current insurer - its4women - a few months ago, they told me to go away as the value exceeded their max of €70k). So it looks like getting insurance shouldn't be an issue.

Is there any catch going with a "regular" insurer like AA instead of specialised ones like Dolmen?

@StevoC - since you just picked up your new van, which insurer did you go with?

Just rang Dolmen.

Got quoted €775 for comprehensive. California being used as our primary and only car. Covers us in the UK and the EU as well for travels of unlimited duration. This includes a 10% discount as I increased the excess from €126 to €500.

They don't take no-claims discounts into account.

They can also cover bike racks, solar panels and a few other bits for an extra €35.

They offer a discount if you're a member of some specific Irish motorhome clubs - I'll need to look into this to see if it's worth it.

That's €200 more than the insurance for our current car (not too surprising as our current car is worth a small fraction of what a Cali is worth) but €200 less than the AA quote I got online. All in all, it's not bad at all given the insane prices some people have to pay for car insurance in Ireland.

I called only Dolmen
Normally they are I think €350 but because I had 6 points on my license I was charged €488.
Had no issue getting insured.
Tax is as you probably know is €102.

A lot cheaper indeed when it’s a second car. Low tax will be nice too for sure.
