Hi all,

Researching insurance ahead of buying my first California SE.

Finding that a number of those recommended like comfort won't insure with a London home address/postcode.

Are their any London owners out there - where did you go for insurance?

thanks in advance

Have you tried Caravan Club. They provide 2 years GAP insurance on new purchases. May not be the cheapest but you do get what you pay for.

I am not in London but I did find Direct Line very helpful. I was lucky enough to get through to someone who understood the vehicle and talked to the underwriters for me. I did find a lot of insurance companies didn't want to know as it is not a straight forward car. I spent about 20 hours on websites and on the phone to get mine sorted so my advise would be, persevere, it will pay off.

We are London based, but keep the van in storage in Essex due to lack of local parking. I did encounter insurers who even refused to cover us if we parked up in London for a night before going away. We use he camping and caravan club who were OK with that, although I can't confirm if they would be OK with full time London living. Maybe worth a try through.

Give HIC a call they are VW Specialist insurers. Discount given for forum members too. I've used them for the last 15+years.
I tried more than and they said VW don't make a vehicle called a California I just laughed and said Thankyou good bye.

I was amazed at the value I got from VW - it might be me and my circumstances, but worth a try

we live in West London. It was tough to find insurance but eventually got a good deal from LV.

Good luck, Rick

Who ever you gat insurance with make sure they will cover all the interior, ie the kitchen if it gets damaged.
A lot of insurers will cover it as a van & not the camping side of things.

Thanks all!

Guess it comes down to timing (as in all sales deals!) and who wants your money the most at that moment.

At this point in time its Safeguard who won. best mix of terms and price - at around £450 who discounted by several hundred. uk and europe unlimited inc breakdown plus 2 year GAP.

To give you a feel the range was big.

Bottom end: discount online providers (not camper specialists) came in around £400. terms not comparable to specialist camper providers.

Top end: £1200-1350. expensive brand names, those not happy with London postcode or new vehicle, and specialist camper firms offering good comprehensive terms.

Safeguard seemed to offer the good terms, with the good price.

Van arrives 1st July.

Now start planning. Only weeks to go.:thumb
