I'm considering replacing side lights with LEDs. Can someone recommend a good set?
Also has anyone got any experience of upgrading to Xenon headlamps?

The members are starting to sus you out James .....lol lol :)

I did upgrade to Xenons - and if you do a search on this forum - you'll see the relevant threads and many many many responses lol.

It's expensive and can be quite complex.

I haven't spent hundreds and hundreds on camping gear as I have a Beach and that was never my remit. So, the lights for me felt justified, and I have no regrets, they are fantastic.

If you want any advice, feel free to PM me :)

I used fleabay and the item was

2 x ERROR FREE CANBUS W5W T10 501 LED SIDE LIGHT BULB 13 SMD - Xenon White

For the princely sum of £7.29 delivered. That was the good buy especially for a pair.

The not so good have been a set of H7 Cree's which are a no go and the blue covers for the H15's which do not fit the bulbs.

Although the bulb idea is not without benefits.

There is an assumption made about Xenons which lead people to suggest a bulb replacement as an alternative.

The presumption is that Xenon lights are only brighter than 'normal lights' - therefore it's simply a case of fitting brighter bulbs and hey presto.

The flaw is that whilst Xenons are brighter their main benefit in the T5 is a much wider scope of light - which makes a world of difference on country roads and the other difference is the LED DRLs which for crappy weather and early morning starts work really well.

The point is - it's not just the bulbs, it's the lights themselves - they give a very different sort of light, both in the light they give out the way it is distributed. i wouldn't not recommend a bulb replacement, seems like a good and sensible idea but as a cheaper alternative to Xenons, not so convinced.

The same argument can be applied to any piece of kit, gadget, alloy wheels, camping gear... That is, there is often a cheaper way of doing things, but there is also personal choice.

i like the side lights idea though and I guess you could upgrade your front lights and pay for those LED DRLs on the bumper :)

I agree that may well be some people's presumptions but not everyone has them and i am probably in a totally different scenario to the majority of folks. I live in a remote part of the world. I drive for 12+ hours at a time at night. I need to improve the standard lights on the van and am used to the white look of Xenons (from a looking out of the window perspective) after having them on a number of vehicles. That means a Xenon upgrade no? I personally am not interested in taking the Xenon upgrade path for a number of reasons (remote location so getting a fitter is impossible and when i am down south i have zero time to get it done. Booking in is hard as I rarely have a long sight of my travel schedule) so my recourse is to try to improve the stock lights in alternative ways. If I do not succeed on the stock units I will look at alternatives including a (ewwwww) light bar which is the last resort (unless that turns out to be more than the Xenon upgrade at which point I may concede to doing it and booking unpaid time off work to fit it in and driving 1300 miles on the round trip lol so your cost plus £400 diesel plus a days wages I.e about the same cost as a new VW Up! ). I did consider not buying the current van as it did not have Xenons but hoped I could achieve something more satisfactory than stock with the existing units.

Wierdly (yes i admit that) an additional reason to change the sidelight bulbs is to reduce power usage so i will be using them instead of the DRLs when driving as I may just forget after parking up at a campsite for a few hours the key is turned and the DRLs on (from experience lol) until it gets dark enough for me to spot the slight yellow twinkling of the DRLs. I concede the existing a ones are only 15W (phew) but if I can reduce that to only 5W (or in fact 10W as now the tail lights are on and so I will need to change those as well) for £7.29 + £5.99 I am all over it. Why do it to save a mere 5W i hear you ask? I should manage to see I left them on with the LED upgrades as they are definately not glow worms in a jam jar that the standard 15W bulbs are lol and if i am at the back of the van i should see the tail lights. The buzzer will also go off when i open the door. If only OSRAM would do one of their upgrade bulbs life would be so much simpler (presuming I would be better able to see those). There again maybe I am unintentionally conceding that the first signs of forgetfulness due to age are manifesting themselves ;) and possibly eyesight issues ooh err.

As my journey and trials continue I may revisit and berate myself for not holding out for a van with the Xenons on especially if I have to pay for them fitting. Hmm thinking about it the cost of trading it in for another van with Xenons would probably be cheaper !!!
