Just found out today and think not many people will know this- a legal requirement in Italy which will include Sardinia, that when carrying an overhanging load i.e. bicycles the red and white warning sign must be made of aluminium and not plastic.
Failure to do this is a fineable offence.
The approved sign is made by Fiamma.

Does that apply to the towbar type bicycle carriers, or are they exempt as they have lights and registration plate?

An Italian policeman would know the answer to that!

It would appear that the towbar bike rack fitted with lights and number plate is defined as a fixed trailor not an overhang . :cool

The code just says it has to be "usually" metallic, and it has to be approved. You may find approved warning signs not only by Fiamma.
You are supposed to hang it on the bike rack also when there are no bikes on.

Just been on the phone to the caravan club and they said it is a legal requirement to display the red and white warning sign on the rear of tow bar mounted bicycle carriers as well as door mounted cycle racks.

Thanks WelshGas but we bought one on Saturday from Embee motorhomes at a cracking price of £23 they had 10% off that weekend to celebate 30 years trading.
