Okay, I wondered why it was so complicated

If you are thinking of stuff like this, you should take a look at Lashing/Cargo Rail.
Its aluminium and comes in long lengths but I made these as they are useful for sliding into "T" track and have movable rings that have a spring clip incorporated.
These ones I made are cut down and powder coated and have the Thule "T" track bolts but you can also countersink the holes and use a M8 CSK screw into a stainless plate.


I use them for Rhino Rack mesh tray or basket or a spare wheel etc. on the roof bars or rails.
