Hi all,

My wife and I are starting on the adventure to graduate from our California to something that has space for an inside toilet and proper shower. We plan to tour South America.

We hate chemical toilets and were searching for alternatives. I found the German company "Kildwick" that specialises in urine separation toilets.

I noticed they also have a size specifically designed for T5/6/6.1 Calfornias. Their site has a paragraph:

Dry toilet MicroLoo: Fits perfectly into VW California T5 and T6

Those two simply belong together: Our MicroLoo is the only dry toilet on the market that fits exactly into the box underneath the sink of the VW California T5 and the T6. That makes the MicroLoo the perfect alternative for the PortaPotti 335 and the ideal model if you want to switch from chemical to ecological toilet.
As a plus, we offer you the Mounting Kit: A floor plate that helps you to store away your dry toilet neatly. The MicroLoo is available as a DIY kit or as a ready-to-use compost toilet.

Link (to the English pages).

Enjoy (if that's the right word)!

5x the cost of the Thetford and "dry composting".

Hard pass.

"the only dry toilet on the market that fits exactly into the box underneath the sink of the VW California T5 and the T6" is a lie: we have trobolo wandago for over a year now and as the manufacturer states ,it fits under the sink. Also very expensive but does the job. search for 'trobolo' on this forum and you'll find many threads. Take a look on youtube also. There are many dry toilets on the market nowadays, not sure how many of them fit under the sink.
Trobolo easier to (keep) clean, smaller : we still have space under the sink on the right side of toilet for 5l container with litter. Weather - and spill-proof and more .. even cheaper than micro loo. Take a look at : trobolo.com .

Interesting but surely the easier answer is to use the 335 but with less polluting chemicals (than the standard ones most people use).

The green toilet additives are much less polluting and seem to be just as effective as the blue ones. There are also very bio fluids made for boats and direct discharge into the sea.

We have a 335 in the van and a DIY dry loo on the boat.... the dry one is considerably easier and faster to empty compared to the 335 (no mess, no fuss, just bag it and bin it). We actually only use environmentally friendly washing machine tabs in the 335 but the process of emptying and cleaning out the loo is time consuming and really needs plenty of water and space to do well. Although we have not bought a trobolo yet it is out intention to do so soon.

As for keeping the loo in the cupboard under the sink I think that is a waste of storage space and inconvenient. We have our loo in an upside down Dunelm ottoman..... hidden in plain site and a perfect foot rest/side table as well :thumb

A number of years ago we booked into the Carradale campsite on the east coast of the Mull of Kintyre. What a beautiful spot! They said that their disposal system could only take the green fluid. Since then we have only used the green fluid. Perhaps we should all be encouraged to use the green fluid?

We acquired a Trobolo earlier this year in anticipation of a month long trip around Europe. Nothing but praise for it, the 335 has been relegated to the garage. They are pricey for what is effectively a square bucket with a comfy lid, but they are an attractive design, fit in the cupboard if needed and very easy to empty compared to a chemical loo.

I reckon this is the way to go if you'll pardon the pun :D

This solution is only for emergencies when there are no other alternatives. I will happily wander through a campground in the middle of the night in a storm to use any available facilities.

I have a foldable toilet that takes up very little space. It works with a biodegradable bag that you can dispose of in the garbage after every use. I always double bag just in case. Normally you would add a crystal to absorb the liquid wastes but to reduce the faff I just use a Travel John urinal bag.
