Hi there, looking for an alternative mattress option to the duvalay when we’re off on a longer trip and space is a bit more of a premium. Has anyone had any experience of the Outwell Dreamboat (or indeed any other self inflating mattress), that could replace the duvalay and the VW mattress? Thanks

We recently bought

From decathlon , have not tried it in the van yet , but tried it at home on the floor and it is comfy

Hi,

When fully deflated, could the mattress be left in situ in the pop top?
I appreciate that the standard VW mattress would need to be removed to be able to do this.
I prefer to leave the sleep system in place rather than packing away at the end of every trip.

I'm also still searching for a better solution to sleep in the pop top and I've tried a couple of options with no joy.

Thanks

Robin

I have the Seat to Summit self inflating mattress, specifically designed for the Cali.
It can be used "downstairs" or up in the pop top. I have the 6,1 with the independent pop top springs, so did away with the original mattress and just use the S2S. Perfectly comfortable and the roof can still be closed

We have an Outwell inflatable (can’t remember the exact model). We use it both downstairs and up top in replacement of the vw mattresses. You can dial in the firmness to some extent dependent on how much you inflate it. It leaves a gap of a couple of inches each side when up top - not a big deal to us but YMMV. We leave it up top deflated with the valves in the air out position. It is thinner than the original when deflated. There are some posts on here that warn against this as it may damage the thin aluminium roof if re-inflates but we have not found an issue with this in 9 months use. My (possibly erroneous) thinking is that the air pressure in the mattress and outside would equalise so unlikely to ‘push’ enough against the roof to cause damage.

A small rechargeable pump (lots on Amazon) is essential - especially for deflation as it sucks all the air out and makes life much easier. We don’t keep any other bedding up there. Would be great to find a whole bed system that allowed this but it still saves a whole lot of room and allows for flexibility of bed options (we’re a couple).

We used a Dreamboat in an awning and it was excellent.
However imo it is far too bulky for use in an Ocean pop top, deflated or not.
I see no reason who it shouldn’t be fine downstairs although we never tried it.
