Sailing from Portsmouth in a couple of weeks and looking for a stopover the night before as its an early crossing. Can anyone recommend anywhere within an hour (approx) of the port?

Cheers!

I second @Martin . We have stayed there a few times and it's a great location with very tidy facilities. Just be aware that if it's a weekend you have to stay for 2 or more nights (C&CC rules) :(.

Thinking of visiting the historic dockyard in Portsmouth. It’s many many years since we last visited. Any recommendations on convenient campsites and California friendly carparks?

Overnight free parking at the Billy Trail Car Park.

Billy trail car park

Great view over Langstone Harbour to Portsmouth to wake up to.

Eastney Esplanade. Sea front location and no restrictions on overnight parking, pay between 0800 and 1800 until end Oct then free the until spring. Public toilets available if needed and a lovely stroll along the water front to the historic dockyard.

Rookesbury CMC site is probably the nearest decent site with facilities and is not far from Fort Nelson Royal Armouries museum, which is well worth a visit. The Park and Ride, (just off the M275) into Pompey is good as the bus drop off is directly outside the Dockyard gate and at £4 a car is a bargain!

If you are sailing with Brittany ferries you may be able to stay at the port the night before. We stayed once as a early crossing we we advised that campervans, caravans and motorhomes could arrive around midnight and sleep in the check-in lanes. No facilities. So as long as you have booked a campervan give them a ring and ask.

Agree with @Martin about the camping and caravan site - one of my favourites due to the proximity of Southbourne rail station with services to Portsmouth, Chichester and Brighton. However it closes for the winter on 15/11.

I think that the Travellers Rest is the pub very near the CCC site?

Have also stayed at Sunnydale Farm as @ArunAlec suggested and found it to be very convenient and able to book for a night.

Enjoy your trip.
