Radio draining battery

Can anyone help solve a winter-long mystery? My 2004 California 2.5 TDI has normally survived winters in the Alps with no problem. This year, the battery was draining completely after not being driven within a few days. It appears the culprit is the factory radio, which somehow comes on by itself after the engine is switched off. I noticed this by chance when I opened up the van one day to find the radio on and searching for a phone connection, although I have never used a handsfree phone system with this vehicle. I noticed also on the drive back to UK recently that, while listening to the radio, it would occasionally do the same - start looking for a phone signal. Any ideas what is causing this or how to prevent it? Is there a reset for the 2004 radio/CD unit? At the moment, my fix is to undo a battery lead every time I park up for more than a few hours.
Thanks
