Having read through alot of the threads on similar issues I have to ask for advice on this

My roof wouldnt go up fully,i did check for faults and cleared the 1000 fault

My visual check on the rams has shown one of them does appear to have some sort of leak or residue under the cover

When the roof did go up it was a little noisy from the pump

I'm guessing either the fluid is low due to the leak and I need to replace the arms and top up the fluid or worse the pump needs replacing

Expert advice on a course of action from here would be great,do I start with replacing the two rams first?

Whichever you do I would suggest exposing the pump and reservoir and check fluid level.
If low, top up. If the roof hydraulics work without any funny noises from pump, then replace rams. Either just the leaking one or both.
You may have to replace roof sensors as well.

Some reading.

Thanks welshgas for the advice,I've had to drop the roof by loosening the screw behind the control panel,on further inspection there is an oily film in the roof drain,I think it's from the left hand side as that side was the one with the residue under the plastic cover, and last year in france that side of the roof had dropped a little while we were camping

Sourcing a ram looks like my next task

Select the year of your vehicle, then Body.

Scroll down until you see the section Hydraulic roof. You’ll see an exploded Parts Diagram and the relevant VW parts numbers. You can order from the same site.

Hi Welshgas is there a way of topping up the hydraulic fluid without taking the cockpit apart?,just so I can get the roof up to work on the rams, the leak is definitely coming from there as I can see and smell the fluid on the floor of my drive coming from the roof gully drains

Just to update on my roof situation,it is now fixed, one ram replaced.

I didnt do the work myself as a friend took it to his hydraulic specialist who thought he could strip it and re seal it,it cant be done however hes got a new ram, refilled the fluid which I bought online and replaced the sensors.

All told
£411 ram,£95 fluid and £260 labour

Like everything on these vans it's a dear do
