We decided that space at the foot of the lower bed was at a premium and made using the 'night loo' a bit tricky.

So I came up with this:

I removed the original metal frame and the comfort mattress and replaced them with a new bed support that I fabricated myself from aluminium extrusions and phenolic plywood.

I then got a local upholsterer to make me a levelling pad which is 50mm thick and made from frim grade automotive foam.

The mattress topper is 3" dacron wrapped medium/firm memory foam. IT is way more comfortable than the VW comfort mattress.

The overall result is that the bed is shortened to 1.86 metres in length and the extra room gained at the foot of the bed is about 20cm. I am 5'11" and have no problem with the new bed length.

No permanent alterations were made to the vehicle, the whole unit is removable in a few minutes.

Very thru what you say , with the lower bed in sleeping position there's not much room sit up on the bed or the front seats ....there's to litlle floorspace .
And the metal shelf in the rear is a pain in the @ss , it should be in two parts or in a diffrent shape so you can take it out and store when you need to load big things.
If your happy with the shorter bed you did a good job but for longer persons this will not work . But in the end it's you that need to be happy ....:thumb

Tried a similar thing myself once but my joinery skills weren't up to much so went back to standard! Maybe you could start a little business! :D
