Small Carista tweaks to fix the annoyances of the T6.1 California

What features might these be? On my T6 I can adjust the speed on which the hill descent disengages (if you have it) and I recall seeing something on the haldex but can’t recall what that was. I’ll check and report back.
Some of these displays would be interesting to have.

Very useful post. Thank You. Addresses my three pet hates. (.....but what about auto close windows on single click?)

Ding when key is left in ignition

Auto fold mirrors not available via single click

Scandinavian DRL no tail lights

Thanks again.
Just to let you know I purchased one of these, if you would like to lend it ??

Finally got to use my Carista to fix some of those little annoying things with the T6.1. Bought it 2 years ago when I got the van. But kept having to bring the van back to the dealer for warranty work and didn’t want to mess with the OBD settings until we got the van to a good place where everything was fixed and working well.

For those not familiar with OBD and the Carista:
- The Carista reader itself: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BBS73F6J?tag=vwcalifornia-21
- list of settings you can tweak: https://carista.com/en/supported-cars/vw/transporter/t6-1

Settings I’ve changed:

Ding when key is left in ignition -> off

Finally. Stops that irritating and completely useless ding-ding-ding-ding-ding-ding-ding when you’re opening or closing the pop-up roof and someone opens one of the doors.

Auto fold mirrors via -> single click

For some incomprehensible reason, the mirrors on the T6.1 Ocean have the ability to fold automatically when you lock the door but they don’t as standard. Every time you lock the van, you have to then press and hold the locking button to get the mirrors to fold.

This setting fixes that. Mirrors now fold automatically every time the van is locked. As they should.

Scandinavian DRL: daytime running lights activate taillights and parking lights -> Yes

For some reason, in Ireland and the U.K., daytime running lights are only at the front. Tailgate lights aren’t on by default during the day. Always found this odd as it makes it look like your lights are broken. And it’s the tailgate lights that you really want to be on all the time anyway as they make a huge difference in seeing the car in front of you in poor visibility daylight conditions.

This setting fixes that. Daytime running lights now switch on both your front and tailgate lights.

Refuel quantity in MFD -> Enabled

This adds the “Refuel quantity” to the list of driving metrics you can choose to display on the dashboard display (see picture). Not exactly an essential feature but still useful for those pumps that require pre-payment. Quantity is displayed in 5L increment. Bit odd that this feature is there but hidden by default.

Auto-unlock doors when shifting into park (P) -> Yes

Still on the fence on this one. By default, your doors remain locked until you remove the key from the ignition. Which is annoying when you stop for a few seconds to pickup someone from the side of the road. Always ends up being a kerfuffle where the person you’re picking up tries several times and fails to open the (still locked) door, you don’t really know why it’s not working, then remember that the doors are still locked, panic-look for the unlock button, find it, unlock the doors then try to gesture to the person outside (who has given up by now) that they should try again and it that should work.

This fixes this. As soon as you put the van in P, the doors unlock. But it means that when you put the van in P when waiting at a traffic light or stuck in traffic, the doors also unlock. Which is loud and annoying. So not sure. I might revert that one.

What I couldn’t fix
I couldn’t change the minimum speed at which the auto-headlights activate. Other cars let you configure this but not the T6.1 Transporter it seems - the option is not there.

That’s really annoying. Auto-headlights only activate when you drive at 60km/h or more. Which makes it fairly useless on small winding country-side roads, unless you drive like a complete madman. I’ve no idea why this limit is there. Really wish I could lower it to 20km/h.

Do you need a Carista subscription to make these changes or is it a free fuction?

Is it possible to change your service intervals with the Carista? Can't seem to find a menu for that.

Regarding undertaking prevention and why it's annoying in my use case scenario:

Driving on motorway or dual carriageway with cars not adhering to lane discipline:
1. I'm on left lane and driving within speed limit, but person on the right is driving slower. Cali detects car on my right and wants to slow me down. I have to override it by pressing pedal. With heavy traffic or all lanes busy, there's not really time or space to slalom around slow driver. Or when I know, I will leave the road soon, I'm not going to overtake, I just want to get to my exit and leave.
2. Empty motorway at night, but some people think 2nd or 3rd lane is where they should be sitting and driving below speed limit. I just continue driving on my lane, hence undertaking them. Of course, I watch them closely, to make sure, they don't decide to change lane, but it never happens, otherwise, they wouldn't be hogging 2nd or 3rd lane on empty motorway. I'm also glad more cars have blind spot monitoring, because there's a bigger chance, they will not change lane and drive into me.
3. City traffic with dual carriageway, 40mph speed limit and average speed camera. And there's someone enjoying driving 35 mph on right lane and slowing all traffic down. You can't exactly overtake them, due to lack of 3rd lane, but you can continue driving on left lane within speed limit.

I drive a lot in London and on motorways M25, M23, so a lot of lane hoggers. Undertaking prevention comes up number of times per drive.

I checked, and when going abroad, it takes about 30 minutes for system to discover that's Cali is now driving on the other side of the road. The same when going back. So for these first 30 minutes, undertaking prevention works incorrectly and discover cars on the wrong side.

I made exactly the same modificaties long ago. But i don’t understandd the last one ?

I changed number for turning signal from 3 to 4.

Which one is the last one? The auto-unlock door when gear is put back to P?

I changed number for turning signal from 3 to 4.
Something I’ve leaned from this thread is the concept of automatic turning signals. For last 10 years, since I’ve been driving reasonably modern cars, I’ve been really annoyed that, whenever I accidentally hit the turn signal stalk, the turn signals seem to flash multiple times for absolutely no reason, confusing whoever is being me.

I’ve just realised through this thread that this is actually a feature  This is kind of mind-blowing.

So if you lightly touch the turn signal stalk but don’t actually push it up or down, the turn signals will flash multiple times and then stop. And that seems to be what some people do to indicate that they’re turning. What I still don’t fully grasp is why you’d do this instead of just pushing the stalk up or down (since the stalk reverts into its neutral position after turning anyway).

I mean the one you couldn’t fix.

The turning signal Will not return to neutral when changing lanes on highway, only after 90 deg turns.

It isn't to indicate turning in to a junction, that should still be done by a full movement of the stalk. It is a lane change indicator

Oh. So that’s only for vans that have the automatic headlight option (where, at night, headlights automatically switch between full beam and dippped depending on whether there’s someone in front).

By default, the full beams only activate when you drive at 60km/h or more. Headlights remain dipped otherwise. Which is a real pain in the country side on small roads where you rarely get to 60km/h but most definitely want the full beams because visibility is zero and the full beams is what allows someone coming around the corner to know that a car is approaching.

Aaaaaaaaah. One of life’s great mysteries has just been revealed to me.

I never use full beam.. thanks for explanation.we all learn a lot here.

This is exactly my approach too. I never cease to be amazed and frustrated by the amount of drivers that have really poor lane discipline, presumably ignorant to the fact that they are often slowing the traffic flow as well as ignoring the Highway Code.

Useful when overtaking or changing lanes as there might not be sufficient steering wheel movement to auto cancel indicators as there is when turning acutely R or L.

Unfortunately there are large numbers of vehicles that have dash cams and if the dolt in the middle lane returns to the inside lane as you are undertaking both of you would be visibly/obviously liable if a crash occurs, as per the Highway Code.
A death resulting from a crash incurred by such a maneuver would inevitably mean prison time and/or you could just waste a few seconds by just overtaking said dolts.
