Snapped off the Cali, but is it needed?

So, I got the van stuck in Glen Etive last night…..
While getting it out I snapped off a fin from under the left front wing.
See below for the left (without) and right (with).


Is this really needed?
Not sure if it is some kind of aero thing?
Advice most appreciated!
Looks easily fixed but VW will charge an arm and a leg for it…

My experience of these sort of bits from VW is they can be surprisingly inexpensive and fixings can be simple - of course may not be in this case!
